Selene, thoughts and pronunciation

DH and I have very different taste in names. My list contains Aria, Scarlett, Avery, Evangeline. His includes Brooklyn, Riley, Reagan, Paige, etc. I would put most of his list in my top 10 most hated names.

Yesterday he suggested Selene and we both fell in love with it. At least that's how I saw it in my head, for some reason I hate Celine. But in researching Selene I found some pronunciations that made it similar to Selena and some that pronounced it Sel-ee-nee which I think is how the Greek Goddess is pronounced.

So, would it be wrong or confusing for Selene to be Sel-een? My sister is Jolene, and it's Jo-leen. So I don't really know why it would be any different.

I'm just really hoping that we've found the one name that we can agree on. DD is Ainsley and our last name is a pretty word rhyming with Dell.

I just want to be sure I'm not making an idiotic spelling/pronunciation.

At first glance I pronounced it Sel-een. I think it's beautiful!

I'd say it Seh-leen. I also prefer it to Celine and Selena. I don't think very many people are going to know how to pronounce the Greek goddess's name so I think you're safe.

I would pronounce it the same as Celine. I have heard Sel-een and Seh-leen. EDIT I guess it's just the spelling you don't like as far as Celine goes.

I'm Greek so I'd pronounce it se-LEEN-ee but I think most people will say se-LEEN. Either way, a very pretty and underused name!

Smile To be honest there are more than several names that I just don't like the look of. They aren't bad names but for some reason I just don't like them.

If I saw Selene, I would pronounce it Sel-een. I prefer the Celine spelling, but Selene is a very nice name as well.

I have a friend with a daughter Selene, pronounced like the Greek goddess - she has to correct the pronunciation every time because people assume it's Se-leen. I wouldn't worry about mispronunciation, unless you want the Greek pronunciation or live in a highly Greek area.

I think it's generally pronounced Sel-een. NMS, but nice name.

I would definitely pronounce it like you do. Selene is NMS, but there's nothing wrong with it. I think the Selene spelling is hippy-ish/mystical. I don't know why. I think I actually prefer the Celine spelling, but then you have the Celine Dion association to deal with.
