I don't have to boil these nipples right?

When we first got bottles, we boiled everything to sterilize, but I don't see the point now that anything and everything goes into her mouth. I can just wash them, right?

Re: I don't have to boil these nipples right?

  • Oh, and full disclosure is I kind of didn't see the point then, but that's what the instructions said to do, and I am a rule-follower. lol

  • My doctor always said you don't have to sterilize everything, just wash it.

Okay, cool, that is what I thought too. I was like "well, I didn't boil my nipples before I nursed or pumped." Huh?

  • I still boil them the first time as per the package directions.  But not after that.

  • Hmmm....I would still boil them, but I see your point about everything going in their mouth. With DD1 I always sterilized bottles and pump parts, and continued to do it once a month or so. But I am a little OCD about that stuff.
  • I didn't boil everything :-/ I boil the majority of things maybe every other week. I use antibacterial dish soap, and he puts everything in his mouth all the time.

  • I had bought a new package of nipples last week and set them on the counter next to the stove to boil. I went to work, and came home and saw the package opened. DH did it. He had no idea. He said he washed them with super hot water and soap. So... I'd say it's okay. But i'm not sure if it has to do with the plastic or something?

I am a total rule follower and boiled them when we got our first set of bottles.  When we got the set of size 2 nipples, I just ran them through the dishwasher - lazy, tired, mommy!

  • I hardly ever sterilize. But then again, DS had diarrhea last week, so...maybe I'm not the best example to follow!

  • It just doesn't make sense to me! I was going to say that I bet it's a liability thing, but then I just saw on Babycenter that it says to sterilize.. so I don't know. But then the package of pacis I just bought says to boil or wash.
  • I boil everything.  The ONE time I didn't with DS1, he got thrush.  I will not be doing that again.

  • Wow..this post made me realize I am OCD.  I boil everything BM related every Sunday.  We both had Thrush like the first 8 weeks and finally got rid of it. I dont want that stuff coming back!
  • I boil the first time and then I run them through the dishwasher after use.

  • We boil everything once when it's new out of the package. Otherwise, I use the sanitize cycle on the dishwasher (I find the nipples look cloudy on other settings), or use hot soapy water in the sink. No more boiling after the initial time.

  • I just washed. I don't ever boil.
  • I am way to much of a hot mess to boil things regularly.

I DO however throw bottle/pump/paci's into a medela steam bag every two weeks or so.  3 minutes in the microwave is much more my style!

  • I mean the first time. I don't boil things regularly!

This. And I feel like our bottles/pacis said specifically do NOT boil or sterilize.  Just wash in hot soapy water.

    Sure Tamb... :-)

I do the first time because they have factory germs on them not the germs lo used to at home. I have been to factories abroad and for that reason I boil. Our goods are produced in "good" factories and we produce goods that are regulated by the FDA and you would be surprised by the conditions.

On a gross side note I have had to ask a supplier to make sure there is no blood on the shipping cartons. One of my interns translated scribbles that came in a sample delivery for me and they said "Get me out of here. Help!". Tongue Tied

  • We boil them for the first use, but after that they go in the dishwasher. It has a steralize setting on it and nothing "bad" has happened yet... soooooo....Indifferent

  • I think it's reasonable to boil or sterilize when you first get them but you really don't need to after.  The sterilization stuff came from a long time ago when the water supply was what it is today and weird bacteria were more common.  We actually used to have patients boil the water they washed their wounds in before, but don't do that anymore.  The only exception would be for premies or sick LO's because they don't have the same ability to manage bacteria or have altered intestinal flora.

  • You probably got enough advice here, but I'm going to add my comment anyways.  I boiled everything the first time just like the directions, and I wash things mainly by hand, but when I feel lazy I throw them in the dishwasher......and I reboil only when they seem they need it.  I've only reboiled a second batch because they felt kinda greasy, but most likely from the soap.
