Starving baby - XP

Hi Ladies, I lurk on this board often and I know many of you breast feed and may be able to offer me some advice.

My DD has been nursing every 2 hours since birth.  She was eating 3 3oz bottles at daycare just fine.  But for the past two weeks she has been eating like crazy.  I started sending 2 3oz and 1 4oz bottle and now I send 4 3-4oz bottles a day and sometimes she finishes those really early and is ready to eat when I pick her up.  She is in daycare from 7:50am - 4:20pm.  Basically she is eating every 1 1/2 to 1 hr and 45 minutes.  I thought her daycare teacher was reading her hunger cues incorrectly but she was eating that way this weekend as well.

I wanted to wait until 6 months to start solids, but I tried them for a couple days and she at least waits 2 hrs before eating again when I offer her 2-3 tablespoons at night and in the morning.  Is this a growth spurt or is she just ready for solids?  I don't want to over feed her, but she seems so hungry.  I don't suspect a change in my supply because I see her eating more from her bottles and I am pumping the same amounts at work.

Please help!!!

  • These are BM bottlles, right? BM can process in as quickly as 90 minutes, so this frequency is in the range of normal--growth spurt or not. Since baby likes to nurse every 2 hours with you (which is normal), it isn't that surprising that she wants a bottle--which has a distinct end to it vs. your breast which will keep on producing--a tad bit sooner.

  • Is she interested in your food? Does she grab for it and has she lost the tongue thrust? I think those things should be factored in.

  • Have you tried bumping your bottle size up to 5 oz each? Maybe she's just not getting quite enough at each feeding, so she's still hungry and can't wait as long for her next bottle. When DD was in DCP, she took 4 oz bottles most of the time, but there were a few weeks here and there where she'd drink 6 oz at a time. Just a thought. I think it's entirely possible it's a growth spurt at that age and she may just settle back into her old habits once it's over.

  • Yes, this is breast milk.  Thanks for your input ladies, I will offer more milk and see how it goes.  She does well with solids, swallows them well, tries to take the spoon and feed herself and she sits up completely unassisted.  I don't pump enough at work so I will try to pump in the evening to add to it.

I had to pump at night for a while around this age.  Eventually I was able to get enough milk during the day to satisfy her hunger without having to pump at night.
