Getting around after the move to convertible car seats?? help

We haven't made the move to convertible carseats yet...so we still use infant carriers, but with our big boys I don't know how long that will last.  they are 6 months now - still 10 lbs to go for the weight limit on the seat but they look so big in them.  Anyway...I just don't know exactly how to get around without them as well.  I am sure we'll figure it out, but if you have ideas I would appreciate them!  We live on a 2nd floor apartment so I guess I will have to buckle one in the car and get the next (right now I can leave one at the top of the stairs so I can always see both.)  Then when you want to just "run in" somewhere and I carry both seats that will end.  I guess always have the stroller?  Some places aren't even made to fit the stroller well. My back already hurts. haha.  I just don't think carrying both in my arms works well.  Do you ever put one in the carrier and just hold the other?  It seems like a disaster waiting to happen?

  • I agree, it's not easy. I used to put one in an excosaucer in front of the TV while I ran the first one out to the car. At the store they'd both go in the stroller. I use two single umbrella strollers with a connector kit ($10) from BRU. The strollers easily come apart so if you ever can't fit through a doorway, you can take them apart. Wearing one baby and putting one in a  stroller is always an option, I never trusted the harness 100% though.

  • The whole second floor apartment thing makes it kind of tricky. I don't think I would feel comfortable leaving one upstairs but you know your area better and you're the mama so it's obviously up to you. My car is parked right in front of my door so I put one in the exersaucer right by the door, run out and put the other in the car, then run back in for the baby in the exersaucer. I always have my stroller in the car but I have put one in the Ergo and carried the other on my hip for a quick errand. (This is probably what I would do to get out to the car if my car wasn't right in front of my house, too). If you're going some place with shopping carts, you can use a double cart or you can wear one and put the other in a cart.

I was worried about this too but by 7 months my back couldn't take carrying the boys in their seats anymore (almost 20lbs each at that time!) So we made the switch and I am so glad! A single umbrella stroller is your friend! Definitely a bit tricky because of being on a 2nd floor but what I do is start the car with automatic starter leave one baby contained in a play pen or exersaucer...strap other baby in car and lock it (with car still running) and go back for the other...but this is in my driveway and don't know about the safety of your area....but still just for running errands its nice to pop one in an umbrella stroller and just carry the other or put one in a carrier...I never had much success with one in carrier and carrying other one...they just grabbed at each other too much! They should be able to handle a cart soon too which is nice depending on where you are going! But seriously we bring our umbrella strollers everywhere...even good in restaurants that don't have 2 highchairs! and I've heard good things about the connectors...can't seem to find them here in canada though :(
  • I wouldn't be comfortable leaving one in a car while I go back upstairs for the other. I did put mine in the car one at a time but we had a 2-story rented apartment and my car was 3 feet from the front door, so I could buckle one in his booster seat just inside the door while I put brother in the car.

If I had stairs to deal with, I'd put one in an Ergo or similar carrier, and carry the other on my hip.

That aside, when I got where I was going I would put them in a stroller or double shopping cart. At someplace like a drugstore w/no double carts, if I couldn't use the stroller I'd put one baby in the cart and wear the other in the Ergo. If I was going to a friend's house I might run in with the first baby and go back for the second or have them meet me at the car to help carry them in, up until they were walking well.  (We moved to convertible seats at 7.5m and my boys started walking at 14m and almost 16m respectively, but I still used the double stroller quite a bit until 2.5; I kept it in my trunk until 3.)

  • I was wondering about this too. I really like the idea of one on hip and one umbrella stroller.

I think that's what I'll do when we get there.

  • I always have the stroller on hand and use that to take them in and out of places.  It definitley isn't as conveinent.  If I was at someone's house I would put one in the car, lock it and go back for the other.  Not ideal but sometimes it is the only option and I would have the other one ready to go so I would be inside for a minute or two.
  • I do one in ergo and one on hip, ergo is faster than my other carriers.
  • I stopped using the infant carriers a little while ago and I found it difficult at first.  Now I think it's easier.  If I am shopping I carry one on me and the other goes in the top of the cart (with the cart cover) and I usually put a blanket on each side to prop her up.  If I am just running in to get a couple of things I will use the stroller.  I live in a house so what I do is I leave on in her crib and out the other in the car and then go get the other out of her crib.

  • I was able to move one at a time into the convertible. DD1 is a little smaller and her seat had a higher weight limit. But once they were both in convertibls I'd buckle one into an ergo carrier and then could carry the other on my hip. Short distancees only  tho :) That and the double stroller saved my sanity... or what was left of it :)
  • I either use my stroller or a double shopping cart all of the time.  I have a Combi and it fits through doorways no problem.  My guys weigh 20lbs each and I have some back issues, so I really try to avoid wearing one and carrying the other for any length of time.

I have a house with a garage so I don't have the issue of getting them to the car.  For that I probably would wear one and carry the other.
