bug repellent?

My LO keeps getting nasty bug bites from playing outside. We have a bug zapper and citronella candles all over the place, but she always comes away with bites that swell and leave a mark for two weeks. Last night she got one on her beautiful little face!  What are my options as I know repellent isn't safe for kiddos!

Re: bug repellent?

  • I recently bought some for my 17 month old from a local lavendar farm.  At first I couldn't imagine how it would work....but it is amazing! Smells great, simply feels like a mist of water on your skin with no residue or sticky feeling.  I do have to apply it often, but works great!

Maybe something to look into in your area?

  • We recently asked our Pediatrician advice re: this since we were planning a camping trip. He said that it's better for the child to be exposed to the "toxicity" of the deet in bug repellent for a limited amount of time rather than run the risk of contracting West Nile. He made sure to emphasize though to wash the spray off once we come inside. At home that may be a quick bath or shower and at camp that may just be rubbing him/her down with bottled water and a washcloth before bed. The office itself follows AAP guidlines to a "T" so we trust their professional opinion.

With that said, over the weekend we used a Cutter spray (I believe) with a gentle formula. Despite the hoards of deerflies and misquitos, our LO didn't get bit once!

  • I am glad you posted this as my LO got a mosquito bite yesterday on his eyelid! His eyelid is all puffed up and looks like he was in a baby brawl.... Sad   I am def. going to take the advice and try both options mentioned as I do not want to go through this again. My pediatrician was worried that it might infect his actual eye so he is now on an antibiotic because of the bite.  Sorry I don't have any advice but I appreciate hearing what others have to say about how they keep insects away from their LO's.

  • BabyGanics has a bug repellent safe for infants that I use on my LO. I've also heard lavender oil helps keep them away.

  • There are lots of bug repellents without deet that are safe for LO's. Look at cosmetics database or one of the EF blogs (safemama.com, I think is one of them that rates products). I forget the name of the brand we use, but it's 100% natural.

Or, for an even cheaper option you could use vanilla. It works really well, but you have to reapply it often. Google something like "using vanilla as bug repellent" and you can find out how to use it. I think you dilute it with water with a 1:1 ration.

  • Just a piece of advice, don't bother with the Burt's Bees Bugspray.  It sucks really bad and we all came in covered with bug bites!!

  • I've been using the Off Clip On Fan--just clipping it onto her pants or shirt and she hasn't gotten a single bite wearing it. It's completely odorless and no chemicals on her skin.
