Part of the cool group....

Does anyone else get the "head nod" or the knowing glance from other people with babies?  We got approached by a couple today at the baseball game.  They did a what's up sort of thing on how the babies were doing there and then passed us again later and said goodbye...just like we now belong to "the group." Does this happen to you?

Re: Part of the cool group....

  • Yes, it seems like it's the norm to check out other babies and nod or smile at their parents now.  It's the "we are in the same boat" look and it does make you feel like you know some secret that you are keeping from the rest of the world.

  • Is this like what bikers do when they pass each other, they have a little wave?

LOL I don't really get this. But I do give smiles to other mothers with babies.

Me too!  It makes me feel like I'm actually not part of the cool group, but I'm the girl that really WANTS to be part of the group and the group just kinda tolerates.  Whatever, I'll take it!

  • With random strangers, yes.  But, in all of our mommy and me classes, I'm the only one who doesn't have more than one, so I'm not in the cool group there yet.

  • I totally know what you're talking about. I've done it to other moms/dads with babies and have also had it done to me.. it's kind of like a "I know what you're going through" thing IMO .. or as a pp said "we are in the same boat as you".

Reminds me of when you're on a boat and you wave to other boaters.. or when you're out for a walk and you nod to other walkers.. etc, etc.

  • It has been 11 years and I'm still waiting to be in the cool group!Cool

With Oliver we always just got side eyed for being so young.   I still get looks like "are those your kids" when I take all my kids out.   (maybe I can't see the nods through our haze of craziness)

When I take just Violet out by herself people assume she is my first and I get a lot of comments, and nods. When I take just the girls out I also get the nods.  I guess I'm blaming my cool factor on Oliver.

Same here, I usually give a smile, but sometimes the moms are too preoccupied or a bit snobby Confused (so I like to think).

Yep! I noticed it during pregnancy as well. I try to give it a lot because I know I appreciate it, particularly to other toddler parents.

  • Our neighborhood is baby central. So while it's hard to get acknowledged on the playground with all the cool parents around, we get a passing nod on the street from time to time.

I don't know why, but the last sentence made me laugh out loud. I'm sorry that people give you the side eye when you're out with your kids..

Also, this took me forever to post because my computer decided to stop working mid sentence.. so sorry for the delay.
