Baby Showers

Not baby shower, but gift, related - etiquette help

Question since you are all etiquette experts: My husband's co-worker gave us a bunch of used boy items. We are thrilled and have picked through the bag and saved everything that we can use. The bag still contains some beautiful hand knit afghans and other items that we simply will not use. Do we give these items back or should we donate them..? I'm inclined to give them back especially because I don't know if one of their family members hand knit the blankets etc.

  • I would let them know how thankful you are and mention you already have a bunch of blankets (even if that's not true) and ask if they'd like them back or forward them on to someone else so they don't go to waste.

  • When I give away my kid's clothes to friends or acquaintances I would be specific of whether or not I wanted something back.  If that was not communicated and since it is a "gift" I would say do what you want with it.  If you're afraid that these handmade items were placed there on accident then you can also say, "I saw you had placed these beautiful handmade blankets in here.  Was it a mistake?"  If they say no then just donate them to a women's shelter.
