WWYD? Help with feeding please

Just bumped N up to 6oz bottles because he has recently been acting very unhappy at the end of his 5oz bottles. The only problem is that he is still acting fussy and as if he he not satisfied, argh. Are your bottle fed (we FF) babies satisfied when they empty the bottle? How many ounces is your 3-4 month old taking? Thanks ladies!!

Re: WWYD? Help with feeding please

  • I have L on 5oz per feeding (I just bumped it up las week). She has reflux so I didn't want to go up to 6oz all at once. She eats about 30z per day. But to answer  your question about whether she feels content after the bottle... She can finish the 5oz no problem. She sometimes gets pissed but she gets pissed when we take the bottle out of her mouth to burp, we burp every 5 mins. All in all I would say she is ok right now with 5oz. We haven't had to make an extra ounce or 2 after so I think it's the right amount for now.

Do you make another ounce or 2 after, and does he eat it without spitting up? A few weeks ago I upped L to 5oz and she spit up after every one so I took her back down to 4oz and tried again last week with success. I don't see why you can't try with a few bottles the extra amount and see how he handles it.

  • Before this week(she's been wonky with her intake this week-only taking a few oz at a time) she was taking 3-4oz of expressed breast milk. She has always been consuming smaller amounts though, so she's not really the "norm".

Could your LO possibly going through his 3 month growth spurt a little late? I say if he isn't spitting it up afterwards, just give him more, not all at once, but if he finishes and fusses, make more?

  • J still won't take more than 4 oz. It's kind of frustrating to me! She's STTN now, and I worry she isn't getting enough calories. Like yesterday for example, she only got 19 oz total. She will finish the 4 oz most of the time, but if I try to offer her more (either in the same bottle or mixed afterwards), she won't take it.

I thought breastfed babies only take about 25-30 oz a day until 6 mos. your milk changes for their needs, so they don't really need more and more. My lo gets 3 bottles of 3.5 oz breast milk in the 9 hrs he is at daycare

But if they begin STTN or napping through feedings(assuming you go by the every 2 hour "rule") they then have less feedings and want to eat more in one sitting vs a little bit more often. KWIM?

I don't know any rules of how much milk breastfed babies eat, but my guy eats 3 or 4  5 oz bottles of breastmilk while at daycare from 730 to 500. (So sometimes 20 oz). He is a big boy though (17 lbs at least). We don't use bottles at the house, so I have no idea how much he consumes on a daily basis.

  • Sorry not sure about ff babies, I think it's a little different, but last week DD started taking 5 or 6 oz bottles of expressed bm, 3 times a day while I am gone for 9.5 hours. But I think she's going through a growth spurt! Maybe that is whats happening with your LO?

  • N does not spit it up afterwards. He takes about 6 bottles each day and for the most part STTN. . Both of my boys are crazy good eaters. N is about 13.5-14 lbs and is always happy to eat and finish his bottles. DS1 always ate well and at almost 4 yrs old is 50th%. I guess since he is keeping it down that maybe we'll leave him at 6oz?

Gotcha! Hadn't really thought about that. My lo only gets bottles at dc and doesn't really sleep great there so I haven't had any missed feedings ;-)

Ps Peyton is so so so cute
