Penn State/NCAA Ruling - Discuss

So it's pretty split on my FB newsfeed as to how people feel about this. I understand it sucks for the players who this is affecting and I do feel bad for those that lost their scholarships. At the same time I am glad it was done because it sends a huge message that you can't allow things like this to go on. The whole situation makes me sick and I think it's a good thing it wasn't glossed over.

Re: Penn State/NCAA Ruling - Discuss

  • I am glad that the NCAA came down hard on them. While it sucks for the current players, I do believe that a message needed to be sent that sweeping things like this under the rug and putting children in DANGER is not to be tolerated!

Maybe more people will take action when they see abuse happening and not allow monsters like Sandusky to continue on.

I went to SMU (the school that received the "death penalty" in football back in the 80's) and I think what they got is probably worse and deserved.  Penn State is such an insular environment and it sounds like the punishment they got should help override the attitudes that led to the Sandusky case in the first place.

I don't care at all that the current players are being punished for what happened in the past.  That's the way all NCAA sanctions work so I think that point is pretty useless.  Penn State needed/needs a huge wakeup call and hopefully this is will be it.

  • I don't know much about college football or the people involved here. But to me, there is no grey area. The things that happened were horrific. I can't believe anyone would have the balls to worry about football in light of them.

Agreed!  As for the current players, they are all being allowed the opportunity to transfer to another school with no penalty.

I agree. The fact that several people knew and helped to cover it up disgusts me.

  • When you ALLOW your employee to continually rape boys on your facility over a 15 year span, while covering for him, the punishment fits.  Who cares if your employee is raping little boys on campus, when there is a game to win and a record to preserve?

Happy Valley needs a wake up call, and here's to hoping it's alert now.

  • The only part I don't agree with, is that I think the NCAA should have given Penn State a multi-year suspension. I am glad that they gave the harsh sanctions that they did, but I think it definitely would have been appropriate for a suspension on top of everything else.

I feel bad for the current players, as they had nothing to do with the cover-up. The players, while given a chance to transfer, will likely not be able to get as much playing time on other teams that are already established. Also, those that lose scholarships may not be able to afford to stay at Penn State, let alone college in general.

  • I think that the ruling should have gone further and helped compensate those students who will lose scholarships - the school should have to give these students the scholarship money that they were expecting.  All 4 years.

It's one thing to not be able to play football now as a student, it's a whole different ball game (get it...ball game...hahaha) for students who were receiving financial assistance and will now be losing it.  They may be losing more than playing football, and that's not right.

  • Although I do feel bad for the current players, I believe the punishment was just and fair. I think it's the wake-up call Penn State needed. Hopefully it'll take their focus off of football and put it on more important things in life.

Exactly! The bigger picture is the immoral and unethical cover-up in order to protect an institute at the expense of childrens' innocence.  I had a FB friend state they could not believe they would tear down Paterno's statue, and that it was a low blow since he has passed.  I believed he earned his statue, but when you cover-up something so horrific, you get that title taken away, alive or not.

I like this idea... better yet, make Penn pay for their tuition at whatever school they want to transfer to

  • The only thing harsher they could have done would be to eliminate/suspend the program altogether. I can see that being appropriate but I'm happy that they came down as hard as they did. Considering how the town idolizes Joe Pat, I think it is a huge and important blow that his and the program's legacy/record that everyone was trying to protect is gone.

DH works with athletic financial aid at a Big 10 school. He was expecting and hoping the program would be suspended.  He has an NCAA conference tomorrow that should be pretty interesting.

I'm torn on this.  I think the students are getting penalized, but how do you make it right to them with out violating the ruling.  If those students still get to play and are getting compensated for there tuition, how is that any different than the scholarship.

I think this is really a moot point because the best players on the team (which are usually the ones with scholarships) will be fleeing the school.  They are not going to want to play for a team that is not bowl eligible.

The school should have to make it right by compensating those players who are losing financial assistance because of the ruling.  The students shouldn't have to lose their education because of this.  I'm talking about the kids who wouldn't be going to college if it wasn't for these scholarships.  I'm talking about the kids who may not be able to continue their education when they lose their scholarship.

  • I thought in the news conference they said that students that were currently attending on scholarship had the option of keeping their scholarship even if they decided not to play football anymore. I think they still had to attend PSU but wouldn't lose their scholarship. I think that's fair. I don't think its right to punish the current students that had nothing to do with what happened.

If you are able to update us on some of what is discussed I'd be really curious to hear about it.  I have no idea if those things are confidential or not...but even your husband's take on the general opinion from the conference would be interesting.

I certainly would not have been against a suspension but I have read some opinions that the fines and the 4-year postseason suspension is a lot harsher than full suspension for a year or two alone would have been.  If they had been given a suspension would they still have had the 60million fine and post-season suspensions in addition?

The conference was scheduled before the ruling came out, so I don't think there is will be scheduled discussion, but there's no way it won't be worked in to some of the topics. It won't be confidential. I'll let you know if he comes home with any thing really interesting.

The scholarship reduction doesn't go into effect until 2014.  It's likely that enough students will either graduate or transfer by this time.  The kids in the program now should still be able to get their education, but the school will just have less aid to give football players in the future.

Ahhh...okay - that's good.  I did not realize that.  Thanks for the clarification :)

That is what I heard as well. If they currently have a scholarship then they keep it. It would be new incoming students that wouldn't receive scholarships. At least that is what they were explaining on the news.
