1 in 13 women drink during pregnancy...I am that 1 in 13.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/19/alcohol-during-pregnancy-_n_1686953.html#slide=more234263

Reading the comments on this article makes me feel like I should be flayed alive for having a drink once a week/once every other week during this pregnancy.

Come on, there are really people who feel like a drink a week justifies forced sterilization?  Am I just delusional about how much I am going to be judged now that I am going to be a mother?

Re: 1 in 13 women drink during pregnancy...I am that 1 in 13.

  • Come live in Europe.  I've had a few (read about two half glasses of champagne) over several hours) and everyone offers me a drink.  Once you're pass the 12 week mark over here, it's viewed as something that is permitted with caution and good sense.  I've had this experience in London, where I live now, as well as Spain and Holland whilst on holiday lately. It is just a cultural thing.

  • I haven't had anything yet but that's mostly because there's no wine in the house and I don't have enough guts to order in public.

I still think about it though...still have 7 weeks left!

I think like most things in life, moderation is the key. No flame from me.

Anyone drinking anything besides wine? JW

  • I had about half of a corona yesterday. No part of me feels at all badly about it.

  • I'm able to get away with ordering in public because I don't look pregnant so no know really questions it. I just have one glass or wine or one low percentage beer when I do have something. I've actually done pretty well and have only had about 3 drinks this whole time...which I assume is why I have lost so much weight since becoming pregnant.

I haven't had any alcohol during this pregnancy and I don't plan to.  I don't judge those who do, but I'd rather not take the risk.

I agree.  To each their own, but I won't be taking any chances.  I don't drink enough in my non-pregnant life for it to bother me anyway.

  • I occasionally have a little bit of wine with dinner or to relax after dinner and it saves my sanity after chasing after a 3 year old all day.  Flay me all you like - the baby will be here in 8 weeks and she is fully developed and I'm not getting drunk! ;0)  Like the previous poster said it's cultural.
  • I think I've had a 1/2 glass of wine total over the course of the last 32 weeks. Meh.  I wouldn't do it every week or whatever, but I think a sip here and there is perfectly fine.

  • I have had a few drinks here and there (read that as a couple glasses of wine) and I am comfortable with that. 1/2  a glass to a whole glass of wine will not hurt the baby at this point.  The part of the article that got me was that the study shows 1 in 5 pregnant women binge drinks. That number is surprising to me.

ETA to clarify that I meant a few drinks over the course of the pregnancy (1/2 glass to a whole glass a couple times) not a few glasses at a time. I am not that 1 in 5Wink

  • To each their own.  You have the people who think that their babies will be born with 3 eyes from eating lunchmeat or sushi, and you have the "everything in moderation" camp.

What I hate is the people that get all holier than thou about it.  Have a drink if you want it!  There's a giant difference between having 1 drink here and there and binge drinking like in the article, so in my eyes, you're totally fine. Big Smile

  • I had a craving for orange cream soda mixed with Stella Artois yesterday.  I told DH and he looked at me crazy saying, "You ARE pregnant.  WHAT???"  He poured me a glass of the soda, put of splash of beer in there and I drank it with relish!  He even tried a sip of it and said, "Wow.  That's actually pretty good!"  Neither of us saw any harm in it.  He also offers me a sip of his wine now and again.  I usually decline because the idea of it normally makes my stomach turn, and I used to love a glass or red with dinner.

  • I didn't have anything until well into 2nd tri, but now that we're in the home stretch I have a glass a week (which is what my OB told me she had with her three pregnancies). What I find amusing are the people who get so up in arms about this, but eat lunch meat or shell fish more than twice a week or raw cookie dough--you name it, there are lots of general "rules" that are broken frequently. And lots of double standards.

I'm completely comfortable with my choices, but I know that from here on out there will be people who choose to judge my parenting decisions and accept that it's just part of the gig.

  • I've had the occasional small glass of wine. I'm really looking forward to heading out to our favorite bar/restaurant and drinking a whole beer (and probably getting tipsy from just that) without having to worry about anything!
  • I think people need to do whatever works for them after talking to their doctor and making their own decisions.

I personally do not drink at all during pregnancy (nor do I drink any caffiene at all, or even eat chocolate (has caffeine) or use anything artificial (no processed foods of any kind, etc).   this is my choice however and I don't judge or care what others do.

I am an older mom-- and I did not want any additional stress on myself if somehting goes wrong of worrying about did I do something wrong.   Therefore, I take the most conservative approach to everything related to pregnancy (did the 1st time as well with my son) and infant care, SIDS, etc-- I figure I would rather do the least risky so I never blame myself for anything that does go wrong.

I think every person is different-- be true to you, do what you think is right and you will be fine!

    good luck!

As much as I want to "shotgun" a Labatt Blue right at the moment I have resisted because when I do have that beer or mixed drink, I want it to be heaven.

My DH had a few beers this weekend when I wasn't around. He was out in the garage most of the weekend and when I went there he was drinking the beers (4 total all weekend). He got this guilty look on his face and he kept apologizing for drinking. I told him go ahead there is no sense in the beer going bad. I would be more mad at him if the beer was wasted then him drinking them.

But I foresee my sister being 1 of the 1 in 5 that binge drink when she gets pregnant. My sister has a serious drinking problem.

If the baby was fully developed at 32 weeks, a pregnancy would last 32 weeks and not 40.  Justify it anyway you choose, but don't make false statements about it.

This. I would never dream of having any type of alcoholic drink during pg. This is one of the great sacrifices I can make early as a mother.

I completely agree. I won't judge others, but drinking during pregnancy is just not for me.

It should be surprising, since that's not at all what the article said. What the study found is that 1 in 13 pregnant women drink, and of those 1 in 13 (approx. 7.7% of pregnant women), 1 in 5 binge drink. So, roughly 1 in 65 pregnant women binge drinks. About 1.55%.

    I agree with this.

I had about a half a glass on my recent bday & that was the first time my whole pregnancy.

Some doctors are more lenient with it, but mine actually advises against drinking any alcohol while pregnant. So, I try to stick with what they advise.

  • I've had sips here and there.  I've also been drinking N/A beer, but that does technically have a small amount of alcohol in it.  I drink them A LOT slower than I would a normal beer.

I'll probably have an occasional glass of wine when I get a little closer to due date and I need help relaxing.  My midwife even suggested that when I first get contractions to go drink a glass of wine and try to relax and fall asleep instead of getting all excited that I"m in labor.

I'm always surprised about peopel being anti-drinking during the pregnancy, but jump on the epidural like it's water.

Wow that was a complete reading comprehension fail on my part! Can I blame it on it being too early on a Monday morning?

This. I've never been a drinker and just have not really been in the mood for it while pregnant. BUT, every time I sit down to a meal here people offer me wine. When I decline (simply because I'm not in the mood for it), they are like "it's OK to drink wine...you Americans worry too much!" I'm always explaining that it's a preference thing and not simply because I'm pregnant.
