I was always very anti co-sleeping and got really mad when my mom insisted that the baby would end up sleeping in our bed ... I hate when she's right :P Here we are almost 7 weeks in and our baby has yet to spend a single night not with us. The first 3 days we took turns holding her and staying up all night until our midwife told us we were crazy and to just sleep with her.
We are now the happy crazy co-sleeping, baby wearing, breast feeding, soon to be cloth diapering (already cloth wiping) family.
Re: So did not intend on this ...
This, exactly!
Same here! The need to sleep near our LO took us completely by surprise. I am from a bed sharing family and everyone warned me that I wouldn't want to put him in his room alone, but I didn't buy it until we brought him home. We co- slept and bed shared (whatever was most convenient/safe at different stages) from day one, and I never thought I would have wanted to do that at all. Our LO had some pretty severe reflux and food allergies (that passed thru BM) early on, so the idea of him spitting up in his room alone made me really nervous.
We never had a problem transitioning him to his big boy bed in his own room later on. He sleeps in his own bed till he wakes up around 3:00 or 4:00, then he walks over to our room and spends the rest of the night with us. I say whatever makes you feel comfortable and helps everyone sleep well, is what works for your family :-)
DH and I were adament that DD1 would sleep in her crib, in her room, from day one. When we thought it was "bedtime" we laid her down and left the room. That lasted all of 5 minutes lol. It just felt so "wrong" to not have my newborn right by me. We happily coslept until 20 months! We all slept so much better that way.
