Was this something your doctor offered to you or did you go about it on your own? We got the results from our NT scan on Friday. The OB called and gave us the stats. He said "It's not horrible, but you need this info" and then offered us an amnio and told us to "do some research" and think about it over the weekend. Later that day I had an appt with my midwife who suggested we have a level 2 A/S at 18 weeks if we didn't want to jump straight to an amnio. DH and I left feeling very confused.
So I've been scouring the internet all weekend and stumbled upon this new blood test. I am now curious why no one mentioned it to us because it sounds pretty awesome. I saw on the website there is a phone number to call for ordering info so I was just wondering if this is something I am going to have to order and get done on my own. I understand it's new so maybe that's why no one mentioned it to me.
Re: If you had the MaterniT21 test done...
It is very new and it is not covered by all insurance. While it is highly accurate it is not 100%. If you are interested ask the doc. They may send you off to someone else to have it done, but they should help you.
Personally I'd rather do that then the amnio, but you need to talk to your doc. If the doc or midwife isn't helpful I would certainly look elsewhere.
My genetics doctor suggested it when my NT scan/bloodwork came back at 1/70 chance of Down Syndrome. I paid $235 out of pocket but the lab submitted the cost to my insurance and they sent me a check for $483 that I have to sign over to the lab. The rest of the cost (total is around $2,700) is forgiven (lab eats the cost). I'd just ask your doctor if you can get the test done - you have to give them the $235 via check or credit/debit card upfront or they will charge you total cost (at least that's what I was told). It took like 3 weeks to get the results for me but the lab had 1 machine go down for a while. It may be faster now. My results came back at negative so I've been way more relaxed about this pregnancy since. It's very accurate - The accuracy rate for Trisomy 21 (down syndrome) is 99.1%, for Trisomy 18 is >99.9% and for Trisomy 13 is >91%.
I didn't want to do any of the invasive tests that had a chance of miscarriage. No matter how small that chance was, I wasn't doing it.
I learned about the test online, but my genetic counselor offered it to me after my 2 round of genetic screening bloodwork.
Like the pp's have said, we paid 235 out of pocket and they drew the labs last Wednesday. I am still waiting for the results, we decided to go this route because the only marker that was elevated was the Down's Syndrome, our ratio was 1:160. Everything else came up in the "normal" range for my age (34). Also our anatamoy scan went great and we did not see any soft markers.
Even though they drew the labs at my MD's office, I know they sent them somewhere else for processing. I think it was New Jersey.
Good luck to you!
When my OB gave me the results of the NT scan (1 in 60 risk of Downs), she didn't even mention the maternit21 test. I read up and found out about it like you did - but when I went to get my level 2 ultrasound, they did offer it to me afterwards. I asked why the OB didn't mention it (she did mention the amnio which I really didn't want), and they told me that because its such a new test, some OBs aren't up on it yet. I guess since the diagnostic centers sole focus is stuff like this, they are more aware - but I was SO happy they offered it! I had it right away after my level 2, and even though they told me it would take 2 weeks to come back, I had the results in 8 days. HUGE relief (they came back fine!!).
That's awesome :-) I'm hoping it's just so new that they aren't aware. I just want to get it done!
The lab is located in California. They fax the results back to your doctor usually so it's like 8-10 business days until you get the results (per estimate). Mine took longer.
I had the MaterniT21 test after getting some sketchy results from the intergrated screening. They told me that there was a 1:15 chance that the baby had Downs Syndrome. I had a Level II ultrasound done at 16 weeks and there were luckily no marker's on the baby. At the suggestion of my Perinatalogist, we opted to do MaterniT21. I had to pay $235.00 upfront. My results came back about 2 weeks ago and was negative. The baby is perfectly fine.
Hang in there. I know it's scary. Do the Level II u/s then make a decision based on those results. Best of luck to you.
My only issue with waiting until the U/S is that they aren't scheduling it until I am 18 weeks. Then at 18 weeks, 2 days I am away for a week. I won't be back until I am almost 20 weeks (when adding in weekends). I feel like I need more peace of mind in the mean time. If the U/S comes back with markers then I won't be able to do anything else about it until 20 weeks, plus waiting for results...
DH and I would MUCH rather have some answers sooner rather than later. I would rather not have an amnio.
Can you request that it be moved up? Mine was originally scheduled for 18 weeks as well. However, my Peri heard how scared I was when he delivered the news by phone that he squeezed me into his schedule 2 days later.
Honestly, I don't remember how I found out about this test at the beginning, probably from Google. I'm AMA so my odds for trisomies are pretty high. My OB sends patients to the MFM dept for NT scan and the b/w screens, so at my NT appt I asked the MFM doctor about it. They said they definitely can do there but I'd need to meet w/a genetics counselor first.
I went home and thought about it for a few weeks. I finally decided that I'd want to get the MaterniT21 even if my integrated prenatal screen comes back "normal" for my age. I called the MFM dept and set up the genetics counseling appt for ~15w and had the MaterniT21 test done then. The results came back around the same time as my Integrated prenatal screen, and then I had my 18w a/s done right after.
I thought my insurance (HMO) doesn't cover it, but our CC was never charged and when I log into my insurance account, I see that my HMO pays for it 100%.
GL to you.

Our IVF miracle, Baby Boy M, arrived on 11/8/2012!
It's a very new test. When my quad came back with an elevated risk (1/174) we had to go have a level II/Ultrasound. That is when the additional testing options were explained and offered to us.
I had the MaterniT21 test on 7/10/12. I was told by the perinatal group physician that the results would be called to me in 7-10 working days. Today is 7/24 -- I called their office because I still don't have results. So frustrated waiting ... if they would have told me 3 or 4 or 5 weeks fine ... but don't make up dates.
I was 10.4 weeks at the time of testing.
Anyone else waited longer than told and have any reason why????
Trying to wait patiently since I'll be a dinosaur mother at age 44 if/when this baby is born
~!
Update: I called the perinatalogy clinic and was able to get my results. They came in that very day. Sadly, the MaternT21 is positive. I then when to the clinic where I had the CVS (chorionic villus sampling). The results will be in late Thurs 7/26/12 or Friday morning 7/27/12. I also had an US prior to the CVS that showed NT at 3.5 thickness. Other than that, there was a nasal bridge - 3 nasal bones on the baby -- it looked quite normal.
I met with a genetic counselor who told me the odds are in the favor of postive T21/DS -- greater than 99%. The CVS is really a formality and confirmatory test. My husband and I are greatly saddeded.
My heart breaks. I'm sad beyond words.

Update:
Well, the Trisomy 21 was confirmed through the CVS testing. I'm so sad that I cannot even put it into words.
I found this very informative site about Downs: https://anthro.palomar.edu/abnormal/abnormal_4.htm
I also found this community posting for positive T21 moms who elect not to continue their pregnancies. It was not an easy one to find and find so many of the comments to be helpful to me at this time:

I'm signing off now and going to take myself off The Bump.
Best wishes to all women out there. A normal healthy baby is truly, truly a miracle.
