Natural Birth

My stupid body - confidence gone

This is kind of embarrassing/gross but...

Before pregnancy I occasionally had to deal with the discomforts of constipation. Oddly, since pregnancy my GI system seems to work perfectly, especially if I just follow basic principles like eating enough fiber, drinking enough water, etc.

Until today. I've never experienced anything so awful! The OB thinks that my recent increase in iron dosage could have caused it. Anyway, it was scary and agonizing. It was also incredibly frustrating knowing how my body is *supposed* to work and yet having no control to make it work correctly.  I ended up having to call the OB afterwards b/c I was bleeding and was afraid I'd done some damage. We had a good laugh about it, but... ;( My confidence just tanked, big time. So many of these books use examples of sphincter functionality to prove the point that when an opening is designed a certain way, it's perfectly natural for it to expand to do whatever job needs to be done, so you just need to let the body do it's job. My biggest fear has been my pelvic floor not cooperating and yeah, well, my pelvic floor region just put me through a pretty rough, scary ride, and it wasn't even labor!

Anyway, I guess I am looking for encouragement. I mean I know these books are right that when our bodies work *as they should*, in a *healthy way*, natural labor is do-able. And labor is it's own unique physiological event too, and when baby is ready, it could all still go wonderfully, right?

Re: My stupid body - confidence gone

  • I would still bank on your body doing what it should. What a body is designed to do in labor is unique to labor. What it does when we have...well, blowouts...is a whole different thing. You might like the book Childbirth Without Fear that gives some great info on what bodies do in labor. My story is totally different, but with my DS, I feared my body wouldn't do what it should for a birth since I couldn't get or stay pregnant on my own. But yet, it did.

  • Oh, I've been there. With my first I ended up with fissures because it got so bad. But I'll tell you, it's not the same so don't sweat it. Think of it as an external factor (boost in iron) that played a role in causing the problem and you won't have external factors at play in labor because you are choosing to avoid them.  You'll be allowing your body to work as it should and it will!
  • Not that you asked, but I thought I would recommend my iron supplement in case you are looking for something that does not cause constipation. It's called Floridix and it has been a godsend to me!

I buy it from my naturopath but I've seen it at my grocery store and at Vitamin Shop as well.

Good luck with future pooping and childbirth - you will do great :)

We too had infertility trouble, so I definitely relate to that sense of not trusting your body too. I was just starting to really trust my body with such easy 2nd and 3rd tris! Thanks for the encouragement! I am currently halfway through "Childbirth without Fear" - it's a helpful read!

Ugh, no fun right? Very good point regarding avoiding external "interferences... "

  • I was going to add, one body function does not relate to the other... and incontinence during delivery is also very common.  I just hate to think that your confidence has been rocked by something that's normal.

I also used Floradix throughout my pregnancy.  No constipation issues for me either.  GL and chin up!  You will be fine!
