sleeping problems help!

My LO is 3 weeks old and every few days she gets fussy and wont sleep in her bassinet. The other day she woke up at 6 am and wouldn't sleep until midnight! She would sleep only if someone was holding her and every time i would put her down in her bassinet a few minutes later she would wake up and start crying. She does this for HOURS and i cannot sleep nor hold her constantly! I gave her gas drops, exercised her legs by pushing them into her tummy, burped her. I have tried swings and bouncers. Nothing works. Does anybody have any advice?

  • Sounds very much like my LO - he likes to sleep mostly when he's being held and does not want to sleep in his crib. Have you tried swaddling? I find that helps him a little bit in the crib, I think it makes him more secure. I'll change him, feed him, burp him, then rock him to sleep. I'll rock him for about 30-40 min to make sure he's in a good sleep, then set him down. He'll sleep for anywhere from 3 - 5 hours in his crib at that point.

  • I second the swaddling.  DD almost falls asleep immediately when I swaddle her.  Otherwise it's difficult to get her to sleep.

  • I always swaddle her, but she likes her arms out. She screams if i swaddle her arms and wiggles them out. Maybe i'm not swaddling her tight enough. but i'm also worried about her getting too hot. I will try to swaddle her better, but i feel like she gets out of it or it still doesn't calm her. Other days she is so good.
  • wear her and she can sleep in the carrier (mei tai, moby, ring sling or another wrap)...

My LO was like that too. It started with him wiggling his arms out. Then he would kick until his legs were free too. Now we don't swaddle any more.

If you think it's just that she's too hot, try a muslin blanket. We were using the Summer Infant ones from BRU. They are lightweight so LO won't get too warm.

This! I've got a baby that loves to be held all the time as well, and this has helped SO much.

In that case, I'd try wearing her then.  Is she upset when she is awake?  Perhaps a trip to the pedi to rule out anything out?  Couldn't hurt.

  • I just read The Happiest Baby on the Block - it suggests the 5 "s"s - swaddling, side,  swinging, sucking, and sssshhhh-ing. It has great suggestions for calming down a baby.

  • Have you tried having her sleep at an incline in something like a rock n play?  Our baby wouldn't sleep in her bassinet and the RNP was our saving grace.
