Natural Birth

XP L.A. Board: L.A. County Mommies, help?

We HAD planned on me giving birth at a birthing center in Whittier...but found out today at the tour that my insurance will cover the costs of the care, but not labor & delivery itself. Ugh.

Now, I either need to find a hospital or an alternate birth center that will allow me to labor and deliver in water in or very near the Long Beach area. Help? Any recommendations?

  • I am in the same boat right now and was looking at the same Whittier birth center.  I definitely can not afford the $4000 out of pocket.  I am considering with using the same midwife and delivering at the Whittier hospital, where she is able to deliver and have the costs be covered.  My back up plan that I am looking at is the UCLA Midwifery center.  Again a hospital, but with a more supportive staff.  I have been looking all over for more options, but it seems that our options are rather limited in the LA/Pasadena area.  Seems absolutely ridiculous considering how populated we are here.

Somebody recommended South Coast Midwifery to me when I was asking around.  Said it was great and it looks it from what I've seen on their website.  Unfortunately it was too far from me (I'm out in San Bernardino County) so I'm giving birth at the Ancient Paths Midwifery in Chino.  Chino is pretty far, in my mind, but I have absolutely loved them so far.  They even told me of a family who went to a nearby hotel and had the baby in the jacuzzi tub in the room because they wanted a homebirth but lived too far from them.  Might be an option if you're unable to find somebody.

ETA: I have to pay upfront for my car and then bill afterwards, even though we're 100% covered.  I would make sure to clarify what exactly is covered vs. paid out of pocket with the insurance.  The midwifery may be able to lump most of the costs into "prenatal care" so it's covered through insurance and have the labor/delivery be minimal.  Just food for thought.

It was me and I loved SCM :-). I too had to pay up front and get reimbursed but my blue shield of CA insurance did not reimburse much. I had a VBAC so it was worth every penny in my case.

  • I just remembered seeing on FB that Beach Cities Midwifery in South County just opened a office in Long Beach. A friend had a great birth with the original center.
