Made Starbound's lactation cookies sans milk/soy/eggs LIP

Thank you Starbound for posting this recipe https://www.drmomma.org/2010/08/major-milk-makin-lactation-cookies.html

We mutilated the recipe in part to accommodate the girls' food allergy issues and in part because we screwed up making sure we had the correct ingredients. It was a valiant effort and they taste good. They are not overly sweet and the texture is similar to that of a granola bar. If DH starts producing milk we will know they worked!

Here is how it went down substitution wise:

Chocolate chips = Enjoy Life mspi friendly chocolate chips

Butter = Earth's best soy free spread (red label)

2 eggs = 1 medium banana

Whole wheat flour = regular because it was on hand

Baking soda = Baking powder because DH thought we could use the stuff that has been in the fridge for odor eliminating purposes for the last 6 mos. Yeah you are supposed to change it every 30 days. Google gave me the substitution value.

Brewers Yeast = skipped because DH said we had it but we really had nutritional yeast which smells like cheese.

Guess I will check the cupboards myself nex time :-)

Who knows if they will do anything to beef up my late night supply. I will report back in a few days after I eat them.

  • I'd love to know! I wanted to make these this weekend but didn't get a chance to buy all the ingredients.

  • I'm laughing at your H's interpretation of everything. That is typically male. I'm going to make these as soon as I feel brave enough to drag her on a hunt for the special ingredients.

  • Thanks so much for posting! I'm hardly pumping anything anymore and my freezer stash is nearly gone. I also avoid animal products, so I can't wait to try your substitutions!

I'm hoping to make tomorrow. I accidentally bought steel cut oats which would NOT make good cookies, so I'm using quick oats. I have some whole flax seeds I'm going to throw in as well

It is probably good that I cannot compare my version of the recipe to the original :-).

  • Great job Harper's!!  I did read that brewer's yeast is one of the most lactogenic ingredients so despite the smelly cheese/feet factor you should try to include it;)  the one I have stinks too, but I even doubled the amount in recipe and you can't tell with the end result.  GL everyone:)

  • So can you use regular yeast instead of brewer's? The only brewer's yeast I could find was in a huge can at Whole Foods and was pretty expensive, so I didn't get any.  Dying to make these!
  • Is the flax just ground flaxseed?  Also, what kind of oats?  These were the questions I came up with when I saw the recipe the other day.

We ended up skipping the yeast entirely because we only had nutritional yeast which is commonly used as a vegan sub for parmeseam cheese.

Pretty sure it was ground flaxseed. If the wording is different I will come back and post the name of it. We buy regular oatmeal oats in bulk for crock pot Oatmeal. Hopefully those were what the recipe intended.

I made them a couple nights ago.  I used whole ground flaxseed and for the oats-rolled oats.  I found everything I needed (minus the brewers yeast) at my supermarket (Jewel) in the organic section.  We have a local brew shop and that's where I got the yeast.  I used two packets and that was just about 3T and it cost $7.  A little pricey but I am cool with trying anything.  My supply was starting to tank so at least I got it back where it used to be, but nothing more.  Still eating a couple each day.  I didn't even bother trying to figure out the points value for them.  If anyone does WW and makes them, please let me know.

We will have to try next time. H spent last night at the in-laws and then spent all day with them at the county fair. Cookie baking helped fill in the void. DH and I were like "umm the house is so quiet with just D. What do we do now?" :-).
