Friends with Kids: Let's Discuss

For those of you who have seen Friends with Kids (I know several of us planned on watching it last night,) what did you think?

Re: Friends with Kids: Let's Discuss

  • I liked the first 1/3, but the rest was boring. It was so predictable, which I am okay with, but at least keep me laughing.

I loved Maya Rudolph's character and her husband. It reminded me a lot of my own relationship with my doofus H- even though he is the older one. The Kristen Wiig/ John Hamm ugly marriage made my stomach hurt. I am a big wuss about stories where relationships go sour and sad. Blue Valentine made me slightly queasy as well. I can handle a lot of other stuff- death, gore, whatnot. But for some reason the idea that you can take a wrong turn and end up miserable like that chills my bones.

DH didn't like the random flitting through time. He kept muttering about it. I didn't like the dropped storylines. I wanted to know more about Kristen Wig's new boyfriend, and how it ended with Julie's contractor guy. Speaking of the leading girl - I can't deal with the way she talks. She curls her top lip funnily over her teeth and it ruined everything for me. I don't think I'll ever like her for it.

I feel like they set up a great story and then just put forth the minimum effort to wrap it up and end it.

  • Totally different than I thought.  I didn't think it was going to be soooo dramatic and serious.  We got it as a comedy and expected a good laugh!  That being said, it was interesting.  Almost the entire movie I wanted the guy to be dumped and alone and I wanted her to marry her sweet boyfriend.  But at the end, I was so mad about the last speech!  I was expecting a whole "When Harry Met Sally" speech and instead it was "Let's eff and you'll see I like you.". So lame.

  • I'd say I really enjoyed the first half, and after that it was just okay. It was definitely predictable, which I kind of expected. I did like that Jason actually thought he didn't want to be with Julie for most of the movie. It would've been extra cheesy if they'd both been knowingly into each other the whole time.

I actually liked that it wasn't just a comedy...based on the actors and previews, I actually assumed it would be a good mix of comedy/drama/sadness. The Kristen Wiig/Jon Hamm relationship was super depressing, but I liked the point his character made at the end about choosing a partner. In order to have a successful relationship, you need someone you want to be with when things are awful. It's easy to be happy with almost anyone when life is going great; sometimes it's the tough moments that are the most important. A simple enough concept; but I think a lot of people don't think about it.

All in all, I expected a little more out of it, but it was interesting and I enjoyed it that it wasn't just another cheesy romantic comedy.

  • DH  thinks it showed having kids all negative.  I agree to a point.  It did kind of portray a marriage doomed once kids are in the picture unless you pick an unconventional out of the box relationship.

What bothered me was the main character's hair.  Like Pear was saying it was her lip or whatever that was annoying...well my annoyance was that it spanned over several years and she didn't change her hair at all!!  For some reason that really bugged me.  Kind of makes me laugh now how annoyed I was while watching it.

Eh, it was ok.  I also like that it wasn't a complete happy-go-lucky romantic comedy.

  • I watched this last night.  I too thought that it was going to be more of a comedy.  It was interesting to see Kristin Wiig's relationship in the background, instead of the foreground.  Also, it was interesting to see four of those characters were in Bridesmaids.

Julie's character was interesting.  I really enjoyed her so much better in Kissing Jessica Stein (awesome movie!)  Her lips never bothered me in that movie, and her hair was so much prettier to me when it was red.  I agree with pp about the dropped story lines.  What happened to Kurt?  Kristin Wiig's new man?  Also, did they really end the story on 'let me eff you?'  It could have been so much more...
