Talk to me about external versions

ktshafraktshafra member

DD was breech, resulting in a c/s. My anatomy makes breech presentation a little more common (2 less than average size uteruses) but we've still got the ok to try for a VBAC. Well at my last ultrasound (23 weeks) this baby was breech. I know in theory there's time for her to flip, but DD never did from 22 weeks on. My last OB (not VBAC friendly) was against a version, but my new, VBAC friendly OB is all for it. I'm preparing myself now in case it comes down to it.

Anyone do an external version before? What's it like? Would you do it again? Pros/cons, etc? TIA

Re: Talk to me about external versions

  • I had an external version and it failed. I also went to the chiropractor to try and get her to turn that way, fail again.

I have to tell you it's not comfortable when they do it, it's like they are trying to turn your stomach around. I had a shot to relax my muscles and they had the operating room ready incase DD went into distress and needed to come out then. It didn't work and then we had to wait for an hour to monitor and make sure DD was still ok. We had to go back in the next day for monitoring again.

I don't think I'd do it again, there is a lower success rate that with chiropractic visits.

  • My baby wasn't breech so I never got to this point.  I have a friend who was attempting a VBAC and her baby was breech.  Her doctor did not permit versions on VBAC patients so she ended up with a RCS.  Not sure what the reasoning was.  Hopefully there are some people around here who can give you first hand stories.

  • I chickened out on having an ecv with my first who was breech. But he would not turn. I ended up with an emergency c/s at 37 weeks for other reasons.

But I've told myself that if this baby is breech and doesn't flip, I'd do one with this baby. I just want a chance at labor. But pp is right in that the success rate isn't great. BUT, after having done literally everything else  to get a baby to flip to no avail, I think I would rather go with a 50% success rate and give it my all.

At last check, this baby was breech too. And I'm 29 weeks.

  • I would do chiro and accupuncture both before I did a version. And probably every crazy idea on spinningbabies too. I know they sometimes work, but they sound really uncomfortable. Luckily, the chiro got DS to turn last time.

  • I had a failed ECV 11/10. I tried all of the spinning babies techniques beforehand as well. My doctor wasn't on board with the Webster technique but said acupuncture was fine. I never tried either of those. I did the ECV without an epidural but did have an injection of the muscle relaxant after the second attempt to move her. Her butt was engaged and she wouldn't rotate more than 1/4 turn to one side and would not turn at all to the other. My doc stopped after three attempts. I was not expecting it to be as painful as it was and I felt like I had been hit by a car for the next few days. If I had to do the first ECV over again I WOULD, but if my current pregnancy turns out to be breech I WON'T do an ECV. When my daughter was delivered via CS her cord was wrapped around her neck a few times which is probably one of the reasons she wouldn't turn.  I did the ECV at 38w5d and the scheduled CS 39w5d.
