Elle?

WDYT of this name? Too nick-namey? Too insubstantial?

Would love to hear your honest thoughts! :)

Re: Elle?

  • I'm a French teacher so it is kind of weird to me as a name. Someone said in a thread below that the Spanish think Mia is a weird name because it means 'mine' in Spanish- Elle means 'she' in French so it just doesn't really sound like a name to me. I don't think it really has a substantial history as a first name prior to Legally Blonde either.

  • It feels like a classic name to me. I think its a beautiful name and a good way to steer from the Ella, Ellie's, which is becoming popular. I would pair it with a very feminine, girly middle name.

  • Personally I like it, but I plan on using it for a nn for Ellie (just cause I love that name.)

The only problem I have with it that kind of bugs me is when you say like for example the full name Elle Woods it sounds like your saying like L. Woods....and that does bug me a little.

  • Love it!!  We are naming our new little girl Eloise and we already call her Elle for short haha.  Way cute :)

  • I like it but it is very popular right now.
  • I have a friend who named her daughter Ellasyn, like Allison only with an "El" at the beginning. It is very unique and I know you could call her Ella or Elle for short but she'd still have a longer name and could have that cute nn.

  • My name is Elle, and I am very happy with it. It isn't popular for people my age, which is nice, and I like the sound of it. I think it is simple and feminine. The only problems I have come across are people not understanding what my name is when I tell them ("Your name is L? Like just a letter?") and my SO is from central america, so his whole family was wierded out by my name meaning "he" in spanish. They ended up just calling me something that sounds like Ellay, which is fine with me. All in all, I have been very happy with my name.

I know exactly what you mean! That's the part that does bug me a little, too!

  • I think it is kind of boring.
  • I think it's a nice, short name.
  • I LOVE the name Elle.  In fact, it is what I had been planning on naming this baby for years.  That is, until I opened my mouth and accidentally inspired a friend with the same last name as me!  Then when I got pg with my girl, I did not know what I was going to do about her name.  I felt like it had already been claimed.  My solution?  I am naming this baby Estelle Marie and her nickname will still be Elle.

Here's my take on Elle:  After being forced into this naming dilemma, I've done a LOT of thinking about this name.  I have found reasons why a longer name that can shorten to Elle may be better.  While I feel that Elle is a beautiful name that can stand on it's own and will age well, I feel like some of the longer names that it can be a nn for are more classic and have more substance.  Estelle, Eleanor, Eloise, Ellen, etc. - they're all names that have been around FOREVER and probably always will be.

Also, the Elle/Ellie/Ella names are quite trendy right now, although I think Ellie and Ella are much more so than Elle.  Even so, in the 6 or so years that I have had Elle as my top name, I've seen it climb up the charts a few points each year.  I think people are starting to choose it over Ellie and Ella lately because those names are so popular.  AND I think that all 3 of these names are even more popular than they appear because they are used as nicknames so often.  Their ranks just show how popular they are as given names.  Even so, Elle is still the least common of the 3, which is good.

The most convincing reason for me to go with a longer name is that Elle simply means "she" or "girl" in latin languages and in those countries, it's not even recognized as a name.  And because Elle simply means "she", a longer name that can be shortened to Elle will usually have a nicer meaning (Estelle means star).  Also, I don't know how you feel about nicknames, but usually, a longer name will have more nickname options.  She might like that when she's older, or she might want to go by her full name - it gives her options.

Anyway, I know I've practically written a novel about it, but it's just a few things I've thought about while considering this name for my baby.
