December 2012 Moms

Oh yes, the nursery.

Is anyone else stressing about starting their nursery?

I feel like I have so many ideas and zero places to start.

I change my mind on furniture every day. I want something that doesn't cost much, is realiable and long lasting (is there such a thing?)

I feel like I'm needing to get started on things!

Have you ladies started/made progress on any of your nurseries?

Re: Oh yes, the nursery.

  • After 5 paint samples my husband will finally paint the room today.  We bought the crib and a dresser a couple weeks ago but it has not been delivered yet.  Instead of buying a bedding set we decided to buy several prints that we liked (link below - we bought six of the jungle animals) and we will work around that with colorful bedding.  I feel like we have a good start, but I am anxious to start putting things in the room.

  • We're moving in August, so we can't start yet. I'm starting to worry big time since I'm normally a planner. My BF keeps telling me that it'll be fine though. :)

Ps. Baby Bargains recommends the Graco Sarah and Lauren cribs - both looked bet reasonable price wise.  Maybe check those out?

  • Yep I have it pretty much done.  We got our crib and are using a dresser that has been in the family for years to double as a changing table.  DH refinished the dresser to match the crib. We didn't have to paint the room since it was already a beautiful shade of blue that we painted before finding out we were pg and I was plannign on keeping it for either boy or girl.  Since we are having a boy, we are set with a sailboat/nautical theme. We registered for the bed set, and my best friend actually surprised me and gave it to me early.  So, we are left to decorate the walls and hang room darkening shades...thats about it! I got alot of my inspiration from etsy and from finding the bed set we loved (DH picked it out).  We aren't paining anything on the walls since when lo gets older we don't want to have to cover any kind of funky wall art.  We are using frames from our wedding and spray painting them white and making a wall collage of differnt nautical pictures matching the colors of the bed set.  We're loving it. GL!

Ours is still mostly a storage room!!!! We havn't bought a single baby thing yet (I do have this awesome ducky picture I want to hand in there though) I think we are waiting to know the sex and that one of my husbands friends from the unit isn't moving in because thats been up in the air for a while haha

You've still got time =) I do know how I want to paint based on boy or girl though! But thats about it ha

  • We just moved last weekend so we're slowly starting on the nursery the next few weeks! I would suggest a crib that can convert to a toddler bed or a twin bed that might be slightly more expensive but will save you in the long run! If you're strapped for cash now maybe start with a bassinet or pack n play and then get a crib or toddler bed later?! I think cribs can definitely be long lasting..it's more the recalls that keep them from continueing to be used! I know BRU is having a 20% off sale so I'm thinking about buying the crib and bedding today so I can save about $100!

GL and you are not alone! There will be plenty of time and if you don't finish in time LO won't know!!

  • We are starting today with mapping out the stripes and testing a few colors on the walls. Our crib won't be here until august... But I'm hoping I can talk DH into assembling her dresser soon. I'm very excited.

  • We haven't started yet. The nursery is currently my daughter's play room, so we need to rearrange a few things. We already have a twin bed in there with matching pillows, quilt, and accessories, so we will keep that (for us to sleep on when we take shifts waking up with the baby). We really only need to buy a crib, mattress, and new monitor. I might also buy an inexpensive bedding set (just b/c I didn't know not to buy one for LO1 and I don't want this LO to have her feelings hurt one day that she didn't have one. I know, silly). Oh, and paint. We already have everything else, so I'm not really worried.

I would suggest finishing your nursery by 30 weeks though. I got SO huge and uncomfortable last time and I was incredibly grateful that we finished early so I could relax.

**As for furniture, you don't need to spend a lot of money on it. We bought a nice matching cherry set from Walmart.com for LO1 and it's fabulous. The entire set was only $550. In many stores, that would only buy you half a crib! Ha! I'd just see what kind of feel you want, and work from that. Also, I suggest darker wood bc it won't show as many stains or bite marks (yes, your child will eventually bite their crib. ha). Go with something gender neutral b/c you can use it for all your kids! GL!

  • Not so much on the furniture or the wall paint color, but everything else, yes. I don't know what to do with the crib sheets/skirt or wall art, or anything else.

  • I have everything picked out and just have to pull the trigger on ordering, however, we won't set up the nursery til baby arrives (my dad and DH will have a hectic few days.) It's a tradition in our culture that you don't bring anything baby related into the house before the baby is born. Baby will sleep in our room for the first couple of weeks/2 months in a bassinet (which we do already have, at my mom's house), so it's not super necessary that baby's nursery is set up right away.

  • We are waiting on our glider and need to hang a shelf and mobile. Other than that we are all set!
  • I have obsessively searched for bedding that will color coordinate with DD#1's room. Not like, exact match, just complimentary. I found a set that goes well-the color I painted her wall letters can be the paint color in the nursery, and then the color of her walls, will be the color I used for DD2's wall letters. Now, DH just has to finish our upstairs room, so that we can move our office upstairs and turn the current office into the nursery. So, I won't get to work on the nursery until probably October when his work is slow enough to do all our home projects! Its going to drive me crazy waiting!

It's more about superstition, keeping the "evil eye" away. My mom swears by it because when she was pregnant with my sister, she set up the nursery way ahead of time (because she just used all the stuff she already had for me, give or take a few pieces), and then my sister ended up in the hospital sick for a looong time after being born. Every time my mom would walk by the nursery, she would become hysterical. Coincidence? Sure. Chance I want to take? Nope.

  • Haven't purchased a thing although we finally went and looked at stuff today. We have a good feeling about what we are going to get though so it's just a matter of ordering everything. I'm glad we have some time until stuff arrives because the nursery needs a little rehab first before we can put furniture in...that's been more pressing for us to take care of at this point.

  • We're moving in August, but I'd like to get stuff picked out so I can at least paint when we move.

I may strangle DH before this is all over, though. He's the most picky guy on the planet. I can't pick out a color without him disliking it, or a crib, or a rocker, or anything. I'll show him a color, and he'll say he doesn't like it, and when I ask why, he says, "I just don't. I know colors and I don't like that one." Again, I may strangle him.

Have not done anything other than talk with DH; our plans are much more simplistic & short term than those posted by the others.  We have yet to decide which of the 2 bedrooms we would want to convert into a room for the LO once he/she is bigger, in the mean time, we're going to go fairly simple/basic ... pack n' play bassinet (still to buy), changing table (from friend), rocking chair (from parents), re-utilizing the pre-existing drawers that are near the area the LO will be sleeping in.  Won't be in own room to start with but this area will get converted into his/her play area with a baby gate & then we will change one of the bedrooms (currently our offices) the LO's room.

I think the Graco cribs will convert to a toddler bed without buying any additional equipment. Looking back I wish I had realized that with my boys. I thought I needed to go all out with their cribs and they ended up chewing on them. Ugh!

I won't be starting anything until our a/s which isn't until August 20. Sigh. That seems so far away.

  • I finally settled on a crib yesterday. My inlaws are buying it and I wanted something affordable and safe. I don't really care if it lasts an eternity, this is the last baby I'm having. I have my a/s on Monday and will pick out the final bedding choice then. I have three for a girl and two for a boy that I have picked out. My sister is coming to visit in October to paint and decorate the room. She has been ttc for several years and really wants to be involved, plus she has such a talent for painting and all that I couldn't say no. I'm not worried about it getting done, I just want to make the final choices. I haven't really purchased anything for this one, waiting to find out the sex.

I used them for the final crib choice. I found it at the store, they actually had one set up, and really liked it.

  • All I have done is start cleaning out the room LO will be in. We need to get the carpets cleaned in there and are waiting for a groupon or something to make it cheaper.

Once we know the sex we will do more. So far I have a crib picked out. Our good friend is an INCREDIBLE artist and wants to do the painting of the room. I think of its a boy we'll do a nautical/airplane theme and if it's a girl in thinking owls and elephants, more of an animals theme. Either way I think I want turquoise or "Tiffany blue" walls and what ever our friend wants to paint in there is fine for me.

  • We cleaned out the room and painted last weekend. Today, DH is stripping and refinishing the dresser/changing table. So much of our plans for the room depend on the baby's sex, which we find out on Thursday. So, we plan to buy the crib and start other projects next weekend when we know what we're having.

  • 1. We bought a bed set before we were PG. It was on sale, and we were hoping we wouldn't have tttc. Haha. It's been in the closet now for almost 2 years.

    2. We just picked up our furniture today. (The crib, and 1 dresser. We have 1 more dresser we need to buy.)

     3. It was painted a beautiful color when we moved in, and we're keeping it.

    4. I'm in the process of spray-painting an old bookcase I had, since our furniture is dark wood, and this was light wood. It's going to be white now.

  • We have the majority of the work in the nursery done. The room is painted, furniture is assembled and in the room. We are both teachers, though, and knew that if we didn't get it done over the summer, we would regret having to rush during a weekend and wouldn't really get to enjoy the process. We only have 1 week off once school starts, and it is the week of Thanksgiving. I will be about 36 weeks pregnant by then, and want to use that time for organization.

  • I have the bedding picked out, and that's...about it. :P The room where the nursery is going to go is currently the room we crate our dogs in, so it will need some cleaning (going to get the carpets professionally steam cleaned and deodorized). Don't think we're going to paint the room, the walls are white and I like them that way (furniture in the room will likely be mostly white as well, I think it makes the room look brighter). Haven't done any research on cribs or dressers yet, though I did find a set at BRU that was $1300, which promptly made me howl with laughter and then close the browser. So, we'll see how that goes after the A/S. :P

  • We painted so that's done. We find out the sex in a week and then I pick bedding. We've registered for our crib and I'll be buying out my registry at the end of August.  that's about it! I'm dying to go through DS' clothe but I am going to wait until we know the sex!

  • Our nursery will be exactly the same- it's gender neutral.

But we're moving DS to a new toddler room.  While I bought a table and chair set and a dresser for him last weekend, it is not put together yet, and I have nothing else at this point, not even a bed.  I need to get on my stuff.

  • The baby's room is currently MH's office that he has barely used since finishing school in December. We have to change almost everything (window treatments, paint, light fixture, put in quarter round) it's going to be a lot of work and is full of junk right now, I'm not looking forward to starting. I do already have the comforter, I made it last week and am in the process of refinishing the dresser/changer. I'm excited for it to just be done, not for the actual fixing up and decorating.

  • Our nursery is gender neutral, so we have zero to do.

However, DD2 is still residing in the room, and her big girl is our current project. We've got to paint, purchase & assemble twin bed, dresser, & valences. Purchase bedding & hang things on the wall.

Hopefully we can get it all done before October 1! We don't want her thinking she's getting pushed out of the room...even though that's what we're doing.

  • We're planning on buying a home in the spring, so I'm not feeling very motivated to set up a room that our LO will only use for a few months before we move.  The baby will sleep in the bassinet for at least the first 6 weeks in my room, and then after that, we'll just take it as it comes. We have a pack-n-play that we'll probably use in lieu of dragging the whole crib out of the attic and setting it up, only to have to take it down a few months later.

We'll set up the changing pad again, and probably buy a new dresser and stick it in the playroom so we can get to the baby's clothes without waking DD in the night.  But I don't really want to do any decorating until we move to our permanent house and I know what the space is going to be.

  • I have a bunch of things that I want picked out on line but I find out the sex out on friday so I'll decide more after that.  My husband wont talk names until we find out either so we have a lot to do. If we are having a boy we prob wont pick a name until I'm in labor...hehe.  Good Luck deciding on things. It is so hard. I'm so afraid that I'm going to pick something and then hate it by the time baby arrives :(
  • Yes! There are so many things to choose from... I feel so overwhelmed!! But im super ready to get started...as soon as we can figure out what we are doing. :/
