Cloth Diapering

Will my CD baby need bigger pants?

Hey Mamas!

I am going to be a first-time mom and I'm very excited about cloth diapering!! I'm getting baby's wardrobe together and was hoping for some advice. Did your babies fit newborn pants when they were born, or did they need a larger size pants to accomodate the diapers? I'm going to be using both prefolds and pocket diapers, and some of them are pretty bulky. Wasn't sure if this had any significant effect on pants size. Thanks!!

  • You will get varying answers on this one, but in my case we didn't have to size up.  Onsies may have had to size up slightly earlier, but he's always had a long torso so I can't really attribute that completely to CDs.

  • We've never had to size up.  My DD is almost 6 months old and can still wear some 0-3 month sized pants and onsies.  At her last check up she was pretty average sized for her age.

  • I think it's really going to depend on the size of your baby and the size of the pants. DD is 11 weeks and still has some NB onesies and pants she can wear (I think they're all Target's Circo brand). Her BRU onesies bit the dust fast because they were too short, and skinny leggings lasted about 6 weeks but all other NB pants were ok. BUT my DD was only 6lbs 4oz at birth. If you have an 8lb baby, or a short/wide baby things will be different.

  • No, not really.  I found sizing to really depend more on the clothing brand more than DD wearing CDs.  Some clothing brands just fit better based on how they were cut.
  • I had to size up for his pants and shorts but not for his onsies.
  • I try to buy forgiving pants with elastic waists for DD. She only has one pair of shorts with buttons. Recently, she wore those shorts on a weekend camping trip when we were using disposables and they fell right down to her ankles and tripped her.
