FTM needs advice about carriers (Ring slings and wraps)

Hello.  I'm a first time mom of a three month, 17lbs, daughter.  We live in an area that is hot and humid in the summer, 90+ degrees, and gets cold and sometimes snows in the winter.  I'm looking at getting a different carrier, I have an Ergo and Baby Bjorn, that would work into the toddler years with our weather.  I've been looking at getting a ring sling, not sure of fabric or brand, or a woven wrap, not sure of fabric/brand/length either.  Maybe both would be better for more versatility. I'm 5'7 and 135lbs and I want something that can be used in a variety of ways in case baby decides she doesn't like that position anymore.  That's why I was looking at wraps but I'm unsure of wrapping all the fabric.  Any advise is welcome.

  • Honestly, for me after about 6 months I liked the Ergo for almost everything. My first child didn't like the ring sling so we went from Moby to Ergo and it worked great. This baby didn't like the Moby and has been enjoying the ring sling so I haven't started using the Ergo as much yet.

If you want to round out your stash you could get a linen or water ring sling. That would allow for easy wearing in the heat without the learning curve of wrapping.

  • I LOVE the Petunia Pickle Bottom Sojourn sling. It's 1 piece so really easy to get on but you have to make sure you buy the right size. I never used it when my DD was little (though it can be used) since I always used my Mei Tai or Pikkolo but I wanted something easy to keep in my diaper bag now for running errands and I picked it up on a whim and it works so well. My DD is 13 months and it's very comfortable to wear her in it. I hip carry her now so my hip supports most of her weight. I think slings are great for toddlers and I plan on trying a ring sling too but the Sojourn is just so easy and comfortable!

  • I loved my Ergo! I also tried a Beco and liked it, but not as much as the Ergo.

  • Impersonally love my wovens. I've heard talk that some of the wool/cotton ones are quite breathable and work well for cold weather and heat. I dislike SSC because my particular kid rebelled against anything but ring slings and wraps after 6 months. And ring songs are great, but not getting a ton of use with my wiggly 16 month old, he prefers to be on the back
