bummer...can't afford my ergo baby

I have a used baby bjorn carrier and a couple slings that were given to me but I was so planning on using the ergo baby carrier since reviews are the best and I have a bad back.  I'm so worried now that I wont be able to wear our LO as much as I'd like...  do you think I will do alright without the ergo?

Re: bummer...can't afford my ergo baby

  • I have a bad back and I survived with the bjorn in the early months. Once baby broke that 15lb threshold it did hurt my back a lot though.

Ergos don't have to be super expensive. Check out consignment shops and craigslist sales in your area. Sometimes you can score one for $40-50 if you're lucky. I got mine on ebay with the original box shipped to my door for $60. Just make sure you do your homework before going that route since fake ones are around now. Here's now to tell the difference--

  • The petunia pickle bottom ergos are on sale at Nordstrom starting today for $90. They also have them at some costcos for the same price. You could always sell the other slings and bjorn to help fund the new ergo!
  • a ring sling is affordable and much more comfortable for you and baby than a bjorn. check your local craigslist and/or babywearing groups. I got our boba barely used for $50 from a fellow babywearing mama.

  •  I had the Ergo with my son and loved it, but we somehow lost it. I have no idea where it went. We couldn't afford to buy another one for use with our daughter, so we were making do with our Moby wrap, but she is getting to heavy for that and it's also too hot to wrap her at this point. We had a bjorn at first with our DS, but it really hurt my back and wasn't comfortable for him either, so we got rid of it.

So then I started looking for an Ergo that was used, and then wound up buying this carrier  https://www.amazon.com/Lillebaby-EveryWear-Style-Child-Carrier/dp/B0083IQRSU/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1342793593&sr=8-9&keywords=everywear+carrier used from a mom on another board. It hasn't arrived yet, but I checked out the reviews and they are great. The ergonomics are the same as the ergo (no crotch dangle, and it's easy on the back), and you can actually wear the baby facing out, which is a huge plus (and a feature that is not available with the ergo). They are around $90 new.

  • For sure check out craigslist if you feel like it is something you have to have. Right now, in my city there are 3 ergo carriers listed for between $65-80.

  • Personally the ergo is not very comfortable for me. I'd wait and try one after your baby is born and make sure you like it before you spend the money (if possible--any stores near you?). I've heard really bad things about the bjorn--uncomfortable for you and the baby. I agree that a RS is great for a little baby, or a stretchy wrap, and both are much cheaper than an ergo. Check out the babywearer FSOT--I bet you will find something there.

  • I would look at the used market--craigslist, consignment, thebabywearer.com FSOT forums, etc. As for the Ergo being "the best", I disagree with that. Different good quality carriers work better for different people. (A regular crotch-dangling Bjorn does not fall into the good quality camp IMO.) I have back issues because of pelvic instability and find that a woven wrap is the best thing for me. Even with my issues I can wear my toddler while 9 months pregnant (for a few minutes, at least). Do you have a babywearing group around you? That is a great place to try carriers out. Also, if you have mommy friends that might let you try our their carriers give that a whirl.
  • Definitely check out thebabywearer.com forums. Carriers like that show up all the time. And if I could go back, I probably would have gotten a beco or a Mai tei instead of my Ergo (purchased on baby steals for a good price)

Do be careful with craigslist and eBay, I know more than a few mamas that have gotten burned with the fake Ergos. Insist on documentation, a few extra dollars is worth verifying that it's a safe, tested carrier
