Intro- mom to 2 week old boy born at 35w5d

Hi! My mane is charity and I am the proud momma of a two week old boy born at 35weeks 5 days. He has been in the NICU for two weeks today. He was initially admited because he was working to hard to breathe, he was only only the oxygen hood for a few hours. The biggest thing we have been working on is eating and gaining weight, seems he has caught on to the gaining weight because he has gained 3 oz from birth weight of 5lbs.

He had an apnea last thursday night, so they put him NPO for 24+ hours and put him on antibiotics, did a blood culture and meningits culutre since I was GBS+. Since then he has had no other apnea spells but he will be going home on a monitor. Today he was moved to on demand feedings since he had taken all his feedings by bottle for 24 hours. He has to take 172 cc's in 12 hours, he made it by 1cc in his first 12 hour window.

I feel like we are making great progress and they said they expect him to be home in a week. I am trying to stay calm and cook and not get to excited because it still all depends on this on demand feeding.

I just wanted to introduce myself and see if anyone had any problems with the feeding that kept them in NICU for an extended time? This NICU stay is 10x harder than I could have ever been prepared for. My H works nights so between visiting LO, napping and seeing H the days go fast but I get so sad when H leaves for work at night! I can't wait to have my little man home to snuggle with when daddy goes to work!

  • Congrats on your DS! Sounds like he is doing well. I think every Preemie is different just like every FT baby is different. I know the feeding was part of what kept my DS there. He had a lot of breathing problems at first though. Sounds like your DS is a champ. That is great. Hope he is home for mommy snuggle time soon. T&P your way.

  • Congrats and welcome!  Sounds like he is doing very well.  My boys were born at 29w4d and feeding definitely kept us in the NICU for awhile after all other problems resolved.  I hope your boy continues to thrive and is home soon.

  • Congratulations on the birth of your DS. Your NICU stay sounds so similar to my second DD stay. Born at 34w5d, mainly admitted because she was early, didn't need o2 until a few hours after she was born, had A&B's, and then keep having them. After a week in the NICU started to finally gain weight.

She came home after two weeks without any monitors. Praying your little guy figures it out soon and is home shortly. Definitely keep us posted.

Congrats on your baby! My baby was born at 30w 4d, and had a lot of feeding issues. It took her a while to be taught to bottle feed, and then would have bradies while feeding until discharge. This was our biggest challenge and we were sent home on a apnea monitor because of it. She did get it, eventually. Good luck with your NICU stay, and hope you get to bring the little guy home soon!

Congrats on the birth of your baby it and welcome to the board! My daughter went home on an apnea monitor and it's not too bad.  She only needs it now when she sleeps.  GL and I hope that your stay is short and uneventful!
