Another 1st B-day Question - smash cake

Are most of you going to make/buy an additional cake for the smash cake or just give LO a piece of his or her b-day cake?  

I'm planning on a Elmo cake & going with all vanilla.  I remember my ex SIL made a separate smash cake for my nephew's 1st and left out an ingredient he couldn't have (eggs maybe?)  It was a small mound of cake w/ frosting on it.  I'm not going to ask her about it (not on good terms).  Her b-day is at the end of August and I'm not a baker (even if it wasn't hot outside!) so I probably wouldn't attempt to make something separate.  I'm just curious what everyone else is doing.

    I love baking and decorating cakes, so for DD1's birthday, I made a few dozen cupcakes and she got her own to smash into. For DD2's birthday, I think I'm making a vanilla sheet cake, but will probably do a few cupcakes on the side in chocolate and let her smash into one of those. Most of our family prefers vanilla cake, but there's just something about a chocolate cake covered baby I can't resist ;)

    We had cupcakes for everyone at DS1's first birthday party, so that's what he ate.  We will most likely do the same for DS2's party.  I don't really see the point of a huge smash cake personally.

    Not sure what to do... he just kind of crumbled the little bit of his dad's birthday cake we gave him last week.  Maybe I'll do a cupcake for him like the others said.  I thought maybe I'd do a sheet cake and cut out two circles and stack them, but that sounds like a lot of work... hm...

    I'm making Kendall's smash cake and go back and forth on if I want to make cupcakes for everyoen or just do a sheet cake from Costco.

    I baked cupcakes and then made Penelope her own little smash cake in a mini loaf pan...I decorated it and it turned out super cute :)

    I also made a special frosting for her cake made from marscapone, cream cheese, and honey- so she didn't go into too much of a sugar shock...But she still got a little crazy from the sugar :)

    I made the cake, so I just made a cupcake from the full-size cake's batter and baked them together.  The cupcake was done a little sooner than the big cake, so I took it out before the big cake finished baking.

    were we are buying the cake we get a free smash cake. I know publix gives you a free smash cake. on his actual birthday I am having smash a cup cake at home. the marscapone cheese and honey sounds awesome :D

    She'll get her own smash cake at her birthday party, and I'm thinking about doing a cake smash photoshoot with a local photog. I love the ones I see on www.heidihope.com!

    BUT - I would never make it myself. I'll order it from somewhere (for the photoshoot) and I've heard that a lot of chain bakeries include a small smash cake with the purchase of a first birthday cake.

    Its family tradition to give our LOs a whole cake to smash :)  And i love it, its one time so why not?  I'm making the Disney Mickey Mouse head in chocolate cake which is LO's to smash and eat ( I figure daddy will help him eat it, lol)  Everyone else gets 3 different flavors of cupcakes.  I am making the cake and all 72 cupcakes.  Yes, 72, even for a 1st Birthday we have a huge family, lol.
