Question for BF mommas

If you child 'asks' to nurse, what do they do?

I automatically nurse Julia when she first wakes up, when I pick her up from daycare and before she goes to bed.

Her signature way of telling me that she is tired, hungry or wants to nurse is climbing on me and fussing. Like she wants to get closer to me, but physically cant. She doesn't really have a certain way to indicate that she wants to nurse...

Re: Question for BF mommas

  • My LO almost never did, just because I offered it before he had a chance to ask and it was part of our routine, like it sounds like in your case. Now that we're down to one nursing session per day, he only "asks" for that one, by tugging my shirt down on our way to the bed (where we nurse). When we were weaning our other sessions, he usually didn't ask, except first thing in the morning for the first few days when he'd tug my tank top down and immediately dive for my chest.

  • M pulls at my shirt desperately and has this little urgent fussy cry. If I put my hand over my shirt and say "not now", she throws her head back and full-on cries.
  • N plucks at my shirt and signs milk

Caroline knows the sign to nurse so she'll do that (preferable) or she'll come up to me, yank my shirt down and try to latch herself (not preferable).  I have flashed more people then a sorority girl on spring break.

  • adele used to suck on my chin when she wanted to nurse.  now she's taken to arching her back and flopping back while whining.

dd1 started asking to nurse early on in her speech development.  first it was 'nuh' then 'nur' and finally 'nurse.'

  • M doesn't really "ask" very often at all.  We are on such a routine, though, that she probably doesn't think to ask.  Sometimes she'll bury her head in my neck or chest, and I assume that's her way of asking, but it doesn't happen often.

  • If I'm holding him, he will just try to help himself by pulling down or pulling at my shirt. If I'm not holding him, he comes over to me and says "ba boo, ba boo" and points.

  • DD used to just pull at my shirt and try to get my boobs out (which was not ideal - especially in public places) so I taught her the sign for milk which is basically opening and closing her fist. I did the sign every time I hooked her on to nurse, and then did it again once she was drinking for her to see. I also took her hand and showed her how to do the sign herself. She caught on quickly and now most of the time she will sign for milk, and will only pull at my shirt if she's being desperate.

  • DS whines and signs 'milk'.

Unfortunately, if he is upset about something else and some one (usually FIL) says, "Oh, I think he wants some milk" - then he starts signing and whining more.

  • She does one of the following: whines and either points at my chest or signs milk, or she just pulls down my shirt. Thankfully she's never pulled down my shirt in public, but I usually ask her if she wants milk before we go out and about anywhere.

  • Glad I'm not the only one whose LO frantically claws at their chest when they want to nurse!  She knows the milk sign, but it's not her go-to way to ask.

  • Fusses, tugs at my shirt and opens her mouth towards my chest.
  • DD will actually walk over to where the nursing pillow is and look at me and breathe heavy and sound fussy.

  • DS gets the boppy, however he can. Boppy = I'm ready to nurse.
