Two Under 2

Do I need another crib and/or another monitor?

Baby #1 will be 18 months when #2 arrives.

Whats best ladies - another crib so she can use it as a crib for a bit and also into the convertible?

What about monitors?

Re: Do I need another crib and/or another monitor?

  • My girls are 19 months apart. We got a second monitor and are still using them for both of the girls.

We did not get a second crib. DD1 stayed in the crib until 23 months, then moved to a toddler bed in her new big girl room. DD2 was in the rock'n'play in our room until about 6 months, then moved to the crib in the nursery about 6ish weeks after DD1 moved to the big girl bed.

  • can you share your toddler bed? Where did you get it?

That's right baby #1 did not go in crib until 4 months old. At that point baby #1 will be 23 months close to 2 years old.

2 years old is ok for a toddler bed?

  • Our toddler bed was handed down to us, but I think it was bought at Ikea. It uses a crib mattress and has little rails on each side so she doesn't fall out.

2 is old enough for a toddler bed for some kids. Some aren't ready until closer to 3, and others are ready at 18 months. It depends a lot on the child. DD1 is very verbal and understood she needed to stay in bed, and she takes change pretty well, so it was an easy transition for her.

I LOVED out rock'n'play! DD2 slept like a dream in it. We didn't notice much trouble transitioning to the crib, probably because we also sleep trained at the same time (she was a week away from 6 months by then).

  • I don't have 2u2 yet, but we won't be getting another crib, DS will go into a toddler bed. He'll be ~15 months when the new one arrives, and we plan on keeping him/her in a PNP bassinet until they outgrow it, so about 3 months.

At DS's 9 mo check up his Pedi actually recommended a toddler bed or twin mattress on the floor at about that age.  He's very tall and strong for his age, and is becoming a climber. She is worried that he's all brawn and no brains and will end up hurting himself.

And yes, the RNP is a total PITA to transition out of. I intentionally sold ours after DS outgrew it so that I wouldn't be tempted to use it again.

  • We never used our monitor for LO#1, she's so loud you can hear her from outside. We have the old monitor set up in our room for #2, who may be sleeping in our room in a cradle the first few months. I would say just keep the one you have.

The crib really, really depends on the child. We bought another crib that converts to a toddler bed(our first crib converts, but requires a $100 conversion kit to do this, while the new crib we bought cost a little over $100 total and converts without a kit. This way we can keep our 22 mo old contained. If she starts getting out of the crib then we'll need to gate the door to her room and convert the crib into a toddler bed.

  • We had a toddler bed gifted to us so we used it. He transitioned starting around 17 months. We started with naps and then did nighttime about 2-3 months later. Lots of people take a "wait and see" approach. Plan on having baby in your room initially, then once baby is born you can assess whether your older child is ready for a big kid bed. Then buy what makes the most sense at that time.

Our kids share a room so we have one monitor. If they each had their own rooms I would get a second monitor. I think it's especially important with a toddler bed. My son crying is plenty loud for me to hear, but if he climbs out of bed and is playing or something the monitor helps me to notice that.

  • We got a second monitor for DS, which I use more when I'm watching both kids during the day. I'm able to put DS up in our room and bring the monitor with me to the playroom with DD.

We did not get a second crib - DD moved to a toddler bed and loved it from night one. I think she was right around 18 months.

  • We purchased a second crib and wouldn't have wanted to survive any other way. DS was 15.5 months old when DD was born. For the first 3-3.5 months we kept her in our bedroom, then transitioned her to her crib. DS is now 2.5 years old and DD is 15 months old. They are both still in a crib.

We also purchased a second camera for our video monitor. I like to be able to see both kids to know if they are actually sleeping, etc.

  • I bought a new monitor for DS1 that was sound only and will be using his AngelCare monitor with DS2.

My boys are about 22 months apart. DS1 still sleeps in a crib. His bed converts into a toddler bed than a full sized bed so we bought DS2 a whole new set

We got a second crib for DD.  I wanted to keep them both contained for as long as possible!  DS just moved to his big boy bed a week before he turned 3.  I plan to keep DD in hers as long as possible as well!

My DS and DD shared a room, so we didn't need another monitor at first.  In our new house, they have their own rooms, but we only have a monitor in DS's room (since he is in the big boy bed, I wanted to know what he was doing!).  Our upstairs is pretty small, and we keep our door open at night, so we can hear what is going on easily.

  • We put DS on a twin at that point-we didn't use a monitor with him, he would just come to us.

My DD went to a twin at 15 months.
