Anybody read Divergent? Other recs?

I just finished the second book, Insurgent.  It's sort of in the same vein as Hunger Games (dystopian YA, strong female protagonist), but not quite as good.  Very enjoyable and a page turner though.

I also just read Maze Runner (I've been on a dystopian YA kick I guess).  It was really good and I can't wait to read the next one.

I read the Sookie Stackhouse books earlier in the summer and liked those.  I also have read Game of Thrones and really liked those.

 Any other recommendations??

  • If you liked Game of Thrones you might like Pillars of the Earth (I did)

  • I just started the Sookie Stackhouse books! Are you a big True Blood fan too? I heard the books are way different but I'm ok with that.

  • The mortal instruments series is great; it is YA. So is the Golden compass. It is part of a trilogy from philip pullman called his dark materials.

Eta: his dark materials is actually a childrens series but it definitely doesn't read like one

  • I have Divergent and Insurgent, but I'm holding off on reading them because the 3rd doesn't come for another year and a half.

I'm reading Feed by Mira Grant currently.  It is the first in a trilogy.  It is about life 30 years after a zombie apocalypse.  I really like it so far.

  • Oh I love me some Sookie Stackhouse! You might see these books among the kids you teach, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. That author also has another series called The Kane Chronicles. I like a good series to get into. I mostly read books that my nephews and niece read so that I always have something to talk to them about. However, I can't keep up with my oldest nephew anymore.

I would not recommend the series from Janet Evanovich, the Stephanie Plum series. Way to violent, with lots of cursing for my tastes. That and the underlying love story is slowly dragged out.

I've read a little about that one on Good Reads.  I will check it out!

I like True Blood, but I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan.  I liked the Sookie books, especially the first 5 or so.  It definitely diverges from the show, but I kind of liked that.  I'm curious about where she will go with the last one.

Most people I know who have read Sookie liked the first few books, but agree that they get pretty unreadable after a while.

I'm reading Game of Thrones now, so I'm off my YA kick for now. I really liked Divergent. I thought the 1st book was definitely better than the 2nd, though. Here are some other dystopian YA series you might like:

Uglies by Scott Westerfield (all books are out)

Unwind by Neil Shusterman (2nd book coming out in a month)

Matched by Allie Condie (3rd book out in the fall)

You're right, Game of Thrones is definitely not YA!  I liked Divergent better than Insurgent too, but I did like how she gave more info about some things that were left a little too open in the first (like more about how society came to be divided into the factions, what is so dang important about the divergent, etc.).  Thanks for the suggestions!

I will check out mortal instruments!   I have read His Dark Materials.  It was good and definitely a little more unique than a lot of the other books in that genre.  I agree about it not being so much a children's book.
