Talk to me about starting amber necklaces

I got a Mon Petit Mardi amber necklace from babyhalfoff.com, and it is 13".  I was so excited to get it and planned on having LO start wearing it around 3 months.  I've put it on her a few times just to see how it looks and fits - and it is pretty long on her.  Should I invest in a second necklace that is 11-12"?

I've felt anxious when I put it on her that it's going to choke her (even though I'm totally on board with having her wear it!).  I know it says not to wear while sleeping - do you leave yours on all of the time, take it off for bedtime, or take it off for bedtime and naps?  Do you leave it on while they are in the carseat?

Thanks!

Re: Talk to me about starting amber necklaces

  • E's has always been a little long on her, but I figured as long as she was under my direct supervision the whole time it didn't matter. Most of the time it was tucked into her onesie. I never let her sleep in it though.

  • DS wears his all of the time (save for bath or pool), but we cosleep. I have never been concerned about choking since it is too short to reach his mouth and each bead is hand-knotted on, so if it broke just one bead will fall off. Strangulation can be a concern if the necklace is long enough to get snagged on things, so you want it long enough to not be snug and short enough that baby can't pull it up  to her mouth.
  • My 8.5 month old still fits into the 10.5-11.5 inch one, and it's still long enough to put in her mouth!  She discovered the necklace about a week ago and keeps trying to chew on it.  I think you're fine for now, but not so much when she realizes it is there! Mine wears it 24/7 and is with me all the time, so I just redirect her when she starts to chew on it.
  • I would get the shorter one so it doesn't loop around itself as much.  I've used them with #2-#4 and left them on all the time.  We cosleep too though, so I don't worry so much at night.

  • What is the purpose of these? I love amber personally (I am Russian so that's probably why!) - and I've seen them on some babies and wasn't sure... I just assumed it was for teething.

  • I'm just curious why you want to put it on your DD so early?

As for the OT itself, DD wears her's 24/7. At night you can wrap it around their ankle in the footies.

yeah ours is an 11" one and its not long enough that she can pull on it. She naps in it, but at night we wrap it around her ankle with a sock over it, and then in the sleeper. She has it on pretty much 24-7.

  • Ds has always hated having it around his neck, so we usually just wrap it around his ankle. You could always do that if it makes you nervous.

she's not wearing it yet, I just wanted to see how it fit when we got it and thought it was awfully long.
