Wearing shoes? And trip to Urgent Care

Poor DS stubbed his toe and tore most of his big toe nail off tonight. Wow do toes bleed! We went to urgent care and they removed most of his nail and bandaged it up. Poor kid!

So only have been putting shoes on DS when we go outside. I read somewhere that barefoot is best for foot development. He's been walking for a few months now. Two questions:

1. How often does LO wear shoes?

2. Any tricks to keep LO from curling toes when trying to put shoes on?

My two boys are getting a surprise May 2015!

  • Aw, so sorry to hear about your little man.  I hate when LOs get hurt :(  Hopefully he has a speedy recovery.

B wears shoes whenever he goes outside or to a public place - the only exception really being if it's a long car ride, since the odds are he'd take them off anyway, or we'd have to stop to change him and end up taking them off.  My mom was always one of the people who gave the side eye to people who didn't have shoes on their kids outside of the house, and I think it rubbed off!  (Same goes for kids without pants, and only in a onesie in public.  I've turned into my mother, I think!)

If you figure out a way to stop the toe curling when putting shoes on, let me know!  Brennan does it all the time!

Hannah just got her first pair of shoes last week. I put them on her when we go out if I remember.

  • My kid is always barefoot, but I've started realizing that most tots her age have shoes on! She does love putting on (and taking off) shoes, so I dont have advice on the toe curling.
  • we always put them on when we go out now, especially since it's over 100 here and if she walks around the concrete is HOT! (and she loves to get down and walk around)

We're still doing semi-flexible soles like pedipeds and see kai run's smaller line.

  • Sorryabout his toe! Isaac wears shoes when I remember, and daycare requires it for outside times. He's been excited to put on shoes lately,so he's been wearing them more often.

I have Roobeez mini-shoes in a sandal style.   They have a slightly thicker sole than the Roobeez slippers but are still very flexible.   He wears them whenever we go out.

  • So sorry about your little guy's toe!

Ev wears shoes anytime we'll be out somewhere where he could be walking around. Which is most places now, but occasionally I won't worry about shoes if we're just going somewhere like the grocery store where he'll be in a cart the whole time.

As far as toe curling, no advice here. He used to curl his toes anytime we tried shoes, but now that he's been wearing them more often he's stopped doing it. Not sure if he just got used to shoes or grew out of the toe curling or what.

  • Oh your poor DS :( Hope his toe heals fast!

DD wears shoes everyday when we go on our walk in the park and whenever we go run errands (like the grocery or library) because she always likes to be set down and walk. She really likes putting her shoes on cause she knows it means we are going somewhere. I don't have any trick for curling toes because DD hasn't done that before.

  • Ouchie....poor little guy. Hope he's feeling better soon!

Honestly, DS doesn't wear shoes that often. Granted he's not walking more than a couple of steps in the house. So I don't need to worry about his feet getting gross outside. I try to put them on all the time but he constantly takes them off. I'll just keep on trying. And he never did the toe curling thing.

This for us too.  And he doesn't wear shoes if we're just going for a walk and he'll be in the stroller the whole time.

DS doesn't curl his toes, so I can't help there.  He just watches me put them on, then he immediately tries to kick them off.

  • Hope DS's toe heals soon.

DS curled his toes when he first started wearing them, but lately he has stopped.  Since he likes to get down and walk, he wears them when outside or in public.  But he likes taking them off when in a shopping cart so we have to watch carefully so we don't lose a shoe.

  • Ouch :(

She wears shoes every time we are out but never at home or grandparents houses.

  • If we leave the house Cate has shoes on. She wears crocs most of the time, but we recently got her a pair of Striderite sneakers so if we're going somewhere she will eb walking a lot I put those on her.
  • Nikolai did this exact.same.thing last week.  Half his toenail gone and a big flap of skin just hanging there.  So off to the ER we went.  I actually think we really jumped the gun and could have managed on our own but we got peace of mind.

Nikolai rarely wears shoes - in fact he just got his first pair last week.  Really only if we're going to the park or somewhere where he could step on something sharp.  I prefer him barefoot as much as possible.  When he does wear shoes, we have a few pairs of Robeez pre-walkers.  They just have a leather "sole" (really it's just a piece of leather with zero padding) for protection.

  • Yikes! That sounds painful!!

DD only has 1 pair of shoes (pre-walkers w/ the soft soles) that I bought for her birthday party since she was cruising at that time and the party was outdoors. Other than that, she's been barefoot most of the time, but she just started walking about 2 weeks ago. I guess I'll have to start putting shoes on her whenever we go outside now.

Whenever we leave the house DD has shoes on.  At home we all run around barefoot since we have new carpeting (it's a house rule to remove shoes when you come in).  Daycare requires that she wears shoes.  She hasn't figured out how to take her shoes off yet.  She does curl her toes so I just try to distract her when putting them on by giving her a toy or tickling her feet.

  • Since Stella has moved up at daycare, shoes are mandatory.  Knowing this, I had to get her used to them before she moved (she initially screamed bloody murder when we put them on her).  Now granted, she takes them off as soon as she's in the door, but whatevs.  I don't really have a toe curling problem at this point.

  • Ouch, poor little guy! :(

DS doesn't wear shoes often, usually only when we're going somewhere public that I know he'll want to walk around, like storytime at the library. I always keep his sandals in the diaper bag though, just in case.

  • Poor guy! DD only wears shoes when we're out of the house. It used to be an EPIC battle putting them on until I got a bigger size. The ones I had really seemed like they fit but I guess they were too small. Ever since I got the next size, she loves putting her shoes on and will actually give me her foot when I tell her it's time to put her shoes on. I still can't believe it after it was such a huge drama fest before!

  • Maya wears shoes when she's going to be walking outside of our house- the park, stores, etc.  I don't usually put shoes on her in our own yard, house, or friends' houses.

As far as the toe curling- she still does it- maybe a little less than she used to though.  A friend suggested tickling her foot first as a distraction but it didm't really help me.

Sorry about your son's toe- that sounds painful!
