Floaters in vision?

My vision has definitely gotten worse since I got pg, but over the last 2 weeks or so I've noticed floaters in my vision.  NOTHING seems to make it go away.  I get migraines from time to time, and its similar to that (without the headache), but it will not go away.  Is this just another joy of pregnancy?

Re: Floaters in vision?

  • Yikes! I'd never heard of that.  I've always had one floater in my vision, but long before getting pregnant.

I did some searching and found this info on Babycenter.com:

    Can pregnancy affect my vision?

Yes. Changes in hormones, metabolism, fluid retention, and blood circulation can all affect your eyes and your eyesight during pregnancy.

Water retention, for instance, may cause the thickness and curvature of the cornea of your eye to increase slightly. It's a small change, but it could affect how well your glasses or contacts correct your vision. It's also why laser eye surgery isn't recommended during pregnancy and why it's not a good time to be fitted for new contact lenses.

If you experience vision changes during pregnancy, they'll probably be minor. Most women who experience a change find that they're a bit more nearsighted than they were before pregnancy.

If you wear glasses, it's unlikely that you'll need to change your prescription, but it is possible. If you think your vision has changed significantly, have it checked.

Pregnancy isn't a great time to invest in a new pair of glasses, though. In most cases, these changes are temporary and will reverse themselves within several months of delivery.

So that's good news, right? While it may be tough now, the changes are usually temporary.

  • I sorta figured it was nothing to worry about, just more annoying than anything, but I guess I failed to mention that the floaters are black, which is a change from my normal clear migraine floater.  I'm not worried about the floaters themselves, more of what they could possibly mean.  Oh well.  I guess pregnancy strikes again!

  • I have been having floaters, too!  Some have been black, others have been yellowish.  It hasn't happened too often, but I've definitely noticed it within the past few weeks.  I am just chalking it up to pregnancy since I know your eyeball shape can change a little bit!

  • It's probably nothing, but mention it to your OB at your next visit.  Floaters can be a sign of high blood pressure & pre-e.

  • I'm an optometric tech, I haven't heard of this but I'm not terribly concerned about it. If it gets worse, you may call your eye doc to check. If you see flashes of light, callhim immediately.

  • I have had them with all my pregnancies and when I am not pregnant. I have never had PIH or Pre-E but they can be a warning sign for high blood pressure. Have you had elevated readings? Don't worry about them but do mention it to your doc. Them in conjunction with other symptoms of PIH and Pre-E can be a problem.

    Definitely this!

Mention to your doctor - I had it with my last pregnancy and it was an early warning sign of pre-eclampsia for me.

  • I never had them before becoming pregnant, but I get them all the time now - especially when I am outside for a few minutes in the heat. I wouldn't worry about it too much right now, but you should mention it to your doctor if it is possible you may have blood pressure issues. Mine has always been spot on when I go in so I haven't said anything.

Maybe I should start mentioning that I am seeing people in my house now - I know my house isn't haunted, but it is kinda whack to see things walk through the kitchen. I blame it on the pregnancy.

  • I have gotten 2 floaters since I have been pregnant. You can get them checked out but 9 times out of 10 it not a problem. If you get a sudden influx of them or you get something like a spider web pattern then be concerned. You can hold your head tilted to the side and see if it will move out of your vision field.

This! I have been super paranoid about symptoms of Pre-e because I have had it with both of my pregnancies before. I would mention this to your doctor and take note of anything that may be different about the times you experience them. GL!

  • Ok I'm definitely a worrier...and now I'm starting to worry.  To be clear, it is only a problem to have floaters IF you have high BP?  The nurses usually comment on how good my BP is, so I shouldnt be concerned right?  The other than that I find happens frequently is that I get quite lightheaded a lot and (for lack of a better way to explain it) my eyes feel really hot, kinda like theyre going to bulge out of my skull.  This is probably all psychosomatic!  Will def discuss with OB asap!  Thank you all :)

  • I had this too and called my nurses at the OB.  I also have had great BP readings so they were not concerned.  They said that I needed to up my water intake to 10-12 servings of water because this tends to happen when you might be on the brink of dehydration.  Not sure how I could possibly be dehydrated but after uping the water I have seen less of the floaters.  I will say that I have to pee more often...if that was possible!

I would just mention it at your next OB appt or just call Monday just to have them ease your worries!
