puddle jumpers - yay or nay?

I know this was brought up last month but what was the general consensis?  Yes get them or no they're not worth it?  We've been spending a lot of time at our local lake (at least once a week) and i think this might be a good option for LO since she loves to go into the water but will always loose her balance once she's past her waist and tumbles forward.  I also think they might help her learn to swim since she can stay above water but still kick her feet like she was actually swimming.  Am I wrong?  Please advise before I activiely look to purchase these today :)

Thanks! Our friends have these, I just never knew what they were called. They really like them! We just have L wear a regular life jacket.

  • I think it depends on your LOs size.  G is too small since 30 lbs is the minimum.  I'm bummed because I'm not sure he'll even be 30 lbs next summer.

  • Nay if they are tiny like my LO.  He's 23 lbs and not big enough to keep upright - he goes face first into the water.

  • I have one for A.  I think they're great.  She is tiny-21 lbs but I have it adjusted as tight as it will go.  She only wears it in the pool while I am right there but it allows her to swim short distances on her own.

This is almost exactly us too.  C is skinny and only 24lbs so doesn't meet the weight requirement but we only use it in the pool (5 ft max) and we are right next to him the entire time if not still actually holding him.  I like that it gives him a bit of reassurance and allows my arms to have a little help!  I definitely see why it wouldn't be okay to use it for a flotation device in open water though if LO doesn't meet the weight requirement b/c it definitely shifts down on him.  It is as tight as it can go but theoretically he could wiggle out.

  • We use it. DD is only 26 lbs but it fits on smallest setting. It is only in the pool though and I never let go of her.

Ha, that cinches that then, doesn't it? I'm not sure A will be 30 lbs by the time he is 5...Wink

  • I'm going to reiterate what I said in the last post, it doesn't work well as a life jacket at this age but after a little learning curve they can wear them wonderfully in the pool. My DS kicks and paddles himself independently around the pool no problem and he was 22lbs at the last checkup. The pound requirement is VERY misleading. My DD, almost 4, is still not 30lbs. and is more than safe in a puddle jumper. By next summer our LO's IMO will be long enough for it to be safe for them to use as life jackets. The length to counter balance the head weight that forces them onto their back or whatever weird position they get stuck in is the problem.

  • We really like them! The trio didn't really get the hang of them until this year...they have had them for 2 years now. We only use them in the summer time when we are at Grandma's pool though, so with more steady use they may have got the hang of them sooner.
