Calling all autism experts

I have coworker whose autistic grandson is coming to live with her for several months while his parents are serving overseas. ??She has?already found a school for him that focuses on autistic children and has planned for his special diet. ?He just has a lot of trouble dealing with change. ?Any suggestion of ways to make the transition easier for him? ?Also, any suggestions for activities that could be particularly helpful? He is 3 years old.

Re: Calling all autism experts

  • It truly depends on the child and form of autism.  Is he functioning? Does he have outburst?  Does he have delays?

  • Keep his routine the same, bring items that he will recognize.  Has the coworker been to a support group for those with children or grandchildren that have autism?

  • Me Me!!

I would tell her to make a picture "schedule" for him of what to expect, and use simple language

    EX:

Get Up, Eat oatmeal, Get ready, ect

Using pictures to show him what they will be doing will be comforting. He will be uspset when he does not know what is coming next. We would laminate schedules and add velcro so they could flip them down when done. That may not be his level. I would just use simple language, and pictures to tell him what comes next. Not knowing causes panic

  • He is functioning. ?He has outbursts when he focusing and is interrupted. ?He does have delays in language.

  • Also, let her know he may not be willing to go to school for he first few days or longer.  She may need to prepare to take a few days off of work to get him settled.  Pictures of his family and things back home may make him feel more comfortable.  I know my brother has a hard time at the beginning of the school year with new teachers and my dad or step-mom have to go with him half days to adjust.  My brother is a functioning though.  The picture schedule is a great idea.

  • I'm not an expert, but I am a special ed teacher.  One thing I can think of is having a special photo book that the child can have, maybe one made of fabric pages with slots, that he can carry around with him.  Really it's going to be most important that she establishes a routine with him and sticks with it.  I think it's amazing that she is doing all this for him.  It truly warms my heart.  :)

  • With him being functioning then the schedule is really important.  Consistency is something that he will want and need.  She may want to ask what foods he does not like or can not have.  I know that apples set my brother off, because of the texture.  If we peel the apple he is fine.  Best of luck to her.
