Does short now mean short later?

Probably a really dumb question but DS is in the 30th percentile today  and I'm wondering if this is an indication that he is going to take after me and be compact or DH and tall. What do you think or know rom experience?

  • I'm not sure if it is but DD1 has been in the 30th since she was born, she will be 2 this weekend.

  • My brother was off the charts with length and is now about 5' 8" so they didn't correlate for him! Now ds is 85th percentile on length and I'm definitely not assuming he will be tall.

  • I don't think you can use it as much of an indicator, because kids' growth can vary so much. This is coming from the girl who was the tallest girl in her elementary school, and now stands slightly under 5' 2".

  • Nope. Way too many factors to tell. You'd have to measure bone age etc. My oldest was extremely short ( not on the charts got years) He gets a shot daily to help him grow and is now in the 25% which seems big for him! He was only supposed to be 5'1"!

  • Double height at 2 for an estimate. It was accurate for me. But it depends on when you stop growing. Hit puberty early and you probably won't get there.  My cousin said she was supposed to be 5'8 based on this but she got her period at 10. She's now 5'2".

  • Not necessarily. My uncle measured small and ended up being 6'4". But, I was off the charts in height, and I'm 5'10. My sister was above average and ended up 5'7". DD was 50% and ended up 5'3". So, it was accurate 75% of the time there. Just wait it out and see, nothing to be done.

off topic, but period at 10....poor girl. I thought I had it bad getting it a few months before 12.

I hit puberty early, and I ended up being 5'10". My daughter was supposed to be 5', starter her cycle at 10, I was 11, and ended up 5'4".

  • My brother was always much shorter than average, and in high school shot up to over 6 ft...
