Multiples

Prenatal + Extra Folic Acid

Did anyone take their prenatal vitamin and then an extra folic acid vitamin when carrying multiples? A friend of mine who has 2 year old triplets said she thought she had to take an extra vitamin early in her pregnancy and believed it was folic acid but she wasn't 100%.

I will ask my doctor next week...but just wanted to know if I should get a head start in the meantime.

  • I was told to take a total of 2000mcg - 2700mcg of folic acid with twins. My prenatal has 1000mcg so I add the remaining with a supplement.

  • I started taking extra iron and folic acid (on top of the prenantal) once it was discovered we had twins. That probably didn't happen until around 13 weeks though.

I took a pre-natal and a prescription Folgard (folic acid and other B vitamins) tablet while I was TTC and through my whole pregnancy.  My RE insisted.  I have the MTHFR mutation but only one copy.

  • My OB put me on extra folic acid as well. 4 small pills a day, but I don't remember the dosage.

  • I was on a prenatal with extra folic acid and 4 additional 800mcg pills but that started before I was pregnant due to a previous loss.  I continued it until about 22 weeks when my ob said it was okay to stop with the extra and just take my prenatal.  I'd definitely check with your ob!

  • I take a per-natal, prescription folic acid, 4 calcium supplements, and 2 iron pills per day. I have a pill dispenser which really helps me to keep track!

  • I take 1000mcg of folic acid in my PNV and then supplement it with 2000mcg more in the morning and another 2000mcg in the evening.

I am over 30 and I also have a couple of genetic mutations/genes, which can result in a higher incidence of blood clots.  This may may help explain why I am on a higher dose than the other ladies.

Other supplements that I take include: Omega 3, iron, and calcium.  I also have a pill dispenser or I would never remember to take all of them!

Nothing extra here.  Just taking my normal Women's One a Day pre-natals.   I had asked the doctors if I should be taking extra since there are two of them and all of them said not at all.    Now that I see all of you are, I'm worried that I should be.

I have been on Folgard as well during my pregnancy.

  • I've been taking extra folic acid since about week 7 per my OB. Additional Iron was added around week 17 due to being anemic. I would check with your doctor. It appears as though most doctors recommend it. I can't imagine it could hurt (within reasonable amounts, obviously).

  • While TTC and for the first tri I was taking a prenatal with 800 mcg of folic acid, plus an additonal 1600 mcg's - so 2400 total.  After 1st tri my MFM said I didn't need to take that much, so I dropped one of my extra 800 mcg's.  I also take omega 3 fish oil and baby asprin (due to clotting issue and MFM said it can decrease chance of getting pre-e).

Same here.  I asked both doctor's and they said I only needed the 800 mcg/normal recommended amount for a singleton.

  • I take a 400 mcg tab of folic acid along with my prenatal vitamins. I have been taking it since the months BEFORE I even got pregnant. Now I'm 16 week pregnant with twins and my blood work just came up awesome for the chances of Spina Bifida. They said my levels were very slow chances for a single baby, much less twins.
  • My MFM told me the extra folic acid is only needed at the beginning of the pregnancy when the neural tubes, etc are developing.  He told me I could stop taking it now that I am past that point.

  • Yes, in the first tri I took an extra folic acid supplement.  In the second tri I added some additional supplements believed to help with amniotic sac strength, cramping/PTL, overall health in addition to prenatal.
