GREAT appointment!

Just got back from our 12 week appointment. I was super nervous we would not get baby's heartbeat on Doppler but thankfully they found it right away... sounded great in the 170s.

I have a question for all you ladies. My doctor talked about the NT scan and bloodwork. Selfishly I thought, "another chance to see baby on u/s... sounds good" but once I got home, my sister in law talked about how she didn't do it because she didn't want to add any extra anxiety to her pregnancy. Now I"m second guessing myself. It wouldn't change anything for us... we already love this peanut so much, and I guess if there was a problem I'd rather know ahead of time. What are your thoughts on this? Did anyone chose not to get the scan?

Congratulations on a great appointment. I'm not sure what we'll do about the NT scan. I'm 33, so there's not the pressure to have it done that the over 35 ladies get. I had one friend who's doctor basically required her to have it done. I have seen it cause ladies extra anxiety for no reason, so I'm kind of leaning against it unless the doctor says that it can pick up things that can be fixed in-utero.

It is a totally personal decision and there is no right or wrong answer. My doc doesnt offer the NT so I had to wait for quad screen, which of course was abnormal, and then I had an amnio- it turned out everything was fine. I'm the type that has to know as much as possible, but I know that isnt the case for everyone.

We opted out of the NT Scan for the same reason as your SIL for both DS and this pregnancy. You have to make the decision that is best for you, whichever is going to ease your mind.

Personally, I didn't like the percentage of false "positives," (I know, it's not a positive, but a percentage chance that something may be wrong) and decided it was best for us to opt out.

Congrats on a great appt.! We opted for the NT scan because I hadn't had an u/s since 9 weeks and I really wanted to check on baby before my a/s at 20 weeks. I do know that some decide not to do it because of the false positives. I think its a personal decision, good luck!

Congrats on a great appt.!! We chose not to get the scan for the same reasons you're suggesting... the less anxiety I could introduce into the pregnancy, the better, because I was already freaked (and have a penchant for worrying over nothing). We did get the quad screen blood test because it tested for more things, and because our insurance covered it, though.

Glad you had a great appt, I remember the same joy after hearing the hb at 12 weeks on the doppler

As much as I would've loved to get another ultrasound for the NT scan, I chose not to. With having a mc I was already super paranoid and read that they could be wrong on a lot of things with the NT scans. I didn't want to freak myself out if they found something wrong that wasn't really wrong.

I aslo passed on the blood test at 16 weeks that checks for a few things, once again, could mean a lot of false positives.

At 20 weeks, I did opt for the anatomy scan. I was told this was most accurate in diagnosing if something was wrong. Since, I'm keeping him either way, I didn't care finding out late in the game. Luckily, everything measured perfectly. Plus, at this ultrasound you find out the sex!

Glad to hear you had a great appointment!

We opted not to get the NT scan, I am a natural worrier, and obviously being PgAL I'm more worried than normal I guess you would say. So I figured since it wouldn't change the outcome of the pregnancy either way we would opt not to do it. I am glad we did because I know myself and even if it came back that she had low odd's of having Down's or Trisomy 18 I would concentrate on that tiny chance. My doctor said that they look for soft markers for Down's at the A/S, which our LO didn't have any of those markers, and she looked great at our 3D ultrasound on Monday.
