I was having this conversation with a few co-workers the other day, and I realized a few of them had been to some pretty cool events.
What was your favorite game or event that you attended? first t-ball game of your son... World Series?
there are two motivations in sports, which is yours?
Re: GTKY - Favorite Game/Event attended
I have two.
First is my first professional soccer game. I was doing a study abroad program in Bosnia and we attended a game in Sarajevo. One of the teams had qualified for the Champions League the previous year so it was good quality. The atmosphere was unmatched by anything else I had ever been to... Flares, fires in the stands, chanting obscenities at the keeper every time he touched the ball.
The other was Game 1 of the 2007 College World Series. By far the best atmosphere of any stateside game in any sport - pro or college. I had a great seat even though I had driven halfway across the country without knowing if I could even get a ticket. They entire night was electric, from batting practice to the final pitch.
I live in Philadelphia, and most of you sports guys know the reputation oh Philly sports fans. So I would have to say may favorite event had to be any Philadelphia Eagle or Philadelphia Phillies homoe game! The fans show up hours before the game starts, and it is a tailgating festival. You have various RVs, buses, etc decked out head to toe in Philadelphia apparel. And the fans, well lets just say, they go from calm to border line maniacs by the time the game starts!
My favorite game I would say is Game 5 of 2008 World Series! If you all know how long it had been since the last sports team won a championship (June 1983 to be exact) you will know that this day will be rememered forever because the Phillies brought a championship that the sity can cherish for however long it takes to win another!
I'm a big music fan and have been going to shows since I was in middle school. I listen to mainly punk/indie kinds of music so a lot of the shows are at small venues. Lots of them stand out in my mind so it is hard to pick some but here we go.
Trial - I saw them at a DIY venue called the Che Cafe on UCSD's campus. They are an epic hardcore band and the show was amazing.
Chris Conley - He is the lead singer for Saves The Day, whom I have listened to forever. He was solo acoustic and played like 3 or 4 songs I yelled out. You really can't beat that and he was ridiculously amazing.
Back when I was in high school I saw the Nobody's and Digger. All my friends were there and it was amazing. Being in high school was awesome.
There are many more but those are the ones that stand out. Going to see Connor Oberst in Madison on Sept 23rd. That should be great too.
Is he no longer calling himself Bright Eyes?
OK, here is mine (on the wife's account again... I should probably get my own).
Back in 1988 my dad was a purchasing agent for a company and one of the vendors he bought from told him that he had some Cubs tickets for us if we wanted them. Well, turns out my dad was 4 degrees from Harry Caray. The vendor knew Harry's restaurant manager, who obviously knew Harry. We got tickets on the front row, right behind the 1st base dugout. Apparently, they were Harry's tickets. They were playing the Giants and we look down in front of us before the game and saw a jersey that said "Clark" on it. It was Will Clark. We wound up talking to him for a few minutes, he was a really nice guy. My dad asks if he could sign a couple balls for myself and my brother, he said yes. Just as he was signing the 2nd ball, a crowd started to come down, he said bye and ducked into the dugout. Then, the Cubs won the game.
Never again will I ever get front row Wrigley Field seats and I doubt much in terms of quality of seats will ever beat that.
My favorite sports event attended is a tie between 1982 Game 5 ALCS at the old County Stadium in Milwaukee. Brewers came back from behind on a Cecil Copper two out single in the 8th to be the first team to ever win a 5 game series down 0-2.
I was also at the 1996 NFC Championship Game at Lambeau. It was too cold to really enjoy it as much as I could have. Cold as in 8 degree....-13 with the WC.
From what I understand Bright Eyes just finished its last tour. So yes, I think. I saw them earlier this year. I'm not sure what Bright Eyes songs he will play but I guess he has laid them to rest.
I went to a NCAA Division 3 college, which had a football stadium that was smaller than many high school stadiums. Our senior year, the team was playing for the conference title. The estimated attendance was about a couple thousand. Although I have seen Division 1 games and a couple NFL games, this is my favorite by far. It went back and forth all game, coming down to a last second touchdown to win the title. And to top it off, a couple of my best friends were major contributors. Small time game, but I'll remember it forever.
