middle of the night diaper changes

just wondering what your routine was for middle of the night. Right now, we have an established pattern:

9pm or so: diaper, swaddle, feed, sleep

Then we repeat this pattern when she wakes up every 2 - 3 hours.

My question is, do you change your LO diaper every time he/she wakes up? I've read on other boards that skipping a diaper change at night helps LO transition back to sleep better, but it seems like it would be uncomfortable for LO to be in a wet diaper for 4-6 hours at a time....

  • My philosophy is, if they don't seem bothered by it, I don't worry about it.  I let her go maybe 6 hours at night (so usually just skipping one feeding).  Once they start STTN, you aren't going to wake them up to change them, right?

This makes sense. After all,  I don't wake her up from her naps when I hear her poop to change her diaper. I think we'll skip the diaper during her first wake-up tonight and see how it goes.

  • He normally goes after he eats and is awake so I change him.  He has been sleeping 5 to 6 hours at night and only wakes once so I would feel bad if I did not change him.

He eats and is changed at around 10:30

wakes between 3:30 and 4:30 eat and changed

wakes between 6:30 and 7:30 eat and changed

is up for the day between 9:30 and 10

  • We change DD because she got a bad diaper rash that has taken weeks to get under control.  I change her before BFing, then swaddle afterward and put her back to bed.

How many times a night is she up?

My thoughts exactly. Did this with my son and he was fine, and he was quite fussy about having a wet/dirty diaper when he was little.

  • We don't change in the middle of the night either. He gets an overnight diaper that is supposed to be good for 12 hours around 9:30, and then he doesn't get changed until he wakes up at about  7am. He usually eats around 1 or 2 and again at 4 or 5, and with his bed right next to ours I hear him fussing and get him on the boob before he even really wakes up. He eats for about 20 minutes, gets held upright for about 10, and is put back in his bed without ever opening his eyes.

If he developed a bad diaper rash I'd probably change him every time he woke up, but he's not bothered by wet diapers so I'm not going to wake him up to change him.

She is currently up around 3 and then again at 6.  But, even when she was up every 3 hours, we would still change her diaper every time.  It's just sort of the routine we fell into.  I don't know that it's necessary, but I figure since I am up, I might as well do it then or she could wake up again with it bothering her.  If DD was hard to put back to sleep and it woke her up too much, I probably would reconsider.

  • I change her everytime she wakes up. Usually if she's going to fall back asleep, she will regardless of diaper change or not. I loathe the thought of her sitting in a soiled diaper for very long.

this. And she wakes every 2h or so. Plus she gets hiccups when wet.

    I agree.

If he's up to eat anyway, I may as well change him so he's not sitting in a dirty diaper.

  • We change in the middle of the night, because LO has had diaper rash since about 1 week old and poops/pees a LOT (likely what caused the diaper rash). It's a pain, but I don't want him sitting in a diaper that needs changing. I've pretty much never checked a diaper and had it not be wet and/or dirty.

LO usually likes to poop during or right after a feed, so if we change diaper before feeding, we usually also have to change it after. So we just change once after the feeding. This is a bummer, because he's usually sound asleep right after the feeding...and the diaper change wakes him back up right before we're ready to put him down again.

  • DD almost always poops in the middle of her feeding so I change her when she's finished eating.  Otherwise...nope.

I change it. Every time I don't it ends up that she pooped and won't go back to sleep unless she is in a clean diaper or if she does go back to sleep then the next time she wakes up she has soaked through her diaper.

DS is up every 2-3 hours to eat, and I change him with every feeding. He's in prefolds right not so they get pretty wet, and I hate letting him go longer than that.

As for our routine, he wakes & eats for about 15 minutes then falls back asleep. I change him, and then he eats for another fifteen or so before falling back asleep. Rinse and repeat.
