3rd Trimester

Fell down a flight of stairs today

I was just getting off work and was walking out of the hospital into the parking garage. I felt stupid taking the elevator down just one level to get to my car, so I decided to take the stairs.

Well, I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention because something was slippery on the stairs and I fell. They were cement stairs and I busted my butt so hard! I didn't hit my head or stomach, and I feel the baby moving so I think he's okay. I twisted my ankle pretty bad though, and now I'm having more of those achy menstrual-like cramps in my back and lower stomach. Do you think these are contractions? Should I be worried? I'm home now, lying in bed drinking a glass of water hoping they stop.

  • I don't have any medical knowledge of this type of situation, but since you're feeling cramps/possible contractions, I'd go ahead and call the on-call doc to see if they want you to go into L&D for some monitoring just in case.
  • Ouch! Im so sorry to hear that. I'd give your doc a call.
  • I would call the Dr. just to be safe.  I fell at 37 weeks with DD (landed on my side) and ended up with contractions, and she was born 2 days later.
  • Oh no!  I would call the dr anyway, even if you didn't hit your belly.  Keep us posted!

  • . My dr says to call after any type of accident or fall. I'd probably just call to see what advice they give/say to come in for any reason.
  • I would give your Dr. a call, just to be safe.

  • I'd call your doctor. The rule is that you need to be checked out within 24 hours of taking a fall. This is what I was told when I fell out of my truck straight to my ass last pregnancy. I called the following day and they said I should have come in the same day. If you don't feel well, don't hesitate. Hope everything is fine!
  • I agree with the others, it doesn't hurt to call your doctor. Best to play it safe.
  • I took a nasty fall a few weeks ago and I didn't call my OB until the next day because I thought everything was fine. My OB reamed me a new one when I called the next day and said always go in and get checked out even if it seems silly. I'd call your OB, especially since you have cramping.

  • Call your doctor.  Better safe than sorry.
  • I would definitely call, just to be on the safe side.  Good luck!  Hope you are feeling better soon.

  • i would get yourself on the phone with the doc and see if they want you to go in. ?hope you feel better soon!
  • Oh my gosh, I am so sorry!  I hope you're okay. Definitey call the dr.  The same thing nearly happened to me last night at the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert... I was told to use the elevator on the way out... I felt a little silly but DH almost shat himself when he saw it happen from afar.

Plenty of time for stairs in the future, take care of yourself and baby!!  :)

  • call call call!  just in case!  hope you're ok!!
  • Call your dr.  He/She will prob want you to come into the office or go to L&d just to be safe.  They need to check the placenta and the cervix, which is done via sonogram.  I fell at 27 weeks and they monitored me for 6 hours.

  • I hope everything is OK... I would definitely call the doctor.
