Fingerpainting with your LO

Has anyone tried this yet? With it being so hot, we don't get out much these days. I think it would be an absolute riot to break out some paint and have DD go to town. She is still in the "put everything in my mouth" stage and I wasn't sure if there were paints that were safe if she happened to slip her fingers in and I wasn't quick enough?

Re: Fingerpainting with your LO

  • I would love to try it but I'm probably going to wait.  His fingers would never even make the paper and he would be covered!

I am pretty sure there are paints that are safe if they do go in their mouth, I think you can make your own?  Not sure though!

  • I've done it a couple of times for daddy's and gram's birthdays. She didn't try to eat it, but she covered herself and a 16x20 paper in about 2 minutes.

  • What kind of paint did you use?

Just crayola fingerpaint. Lovely nontoxic stuff.

chocolate pudding works just as good and its ok if they eat it.

  • I would try this, but I am pretty sure LO would just try to eat it. There would be no connection like "ok I am going to make markings on a paper". I know that obviously you teach a child these things, but I don't think that as of right now he has the capacity to learn it (now watch me try and be completely wrong)
  • DD makes finger paintings at daycare all the time.  I think they just use Crayola nontoxic finger paint.  I think most paints labeled as finger paint are nontoxic because it is usually younger kids using them, who will put their fingers in their mouths.

Like PP said pudding is basically the same thing and totally edible, or I've even heard of people using purees and just letting LO smear them everywhere.

  • I tried it once with DD with just regular non-toxic paint probably about a month ago. She did NOT like it. I don't know if it was the feel of the paint or what but she was not into it so I haven't tried again.

  • You can make your own fingerpaint by using cornflour and cold water then add food coloring, as well.
