What time does your baby go to bed?

We usually put Beck down for the night between 10 and 11pm. He would sleep 5 hours at the least and 8 hours at the most. The last couple of nights we put him down at 9pm to see how he would do and he woke up after 4 hours both times. I don't know if we should just keep trying the earlier time and he will eventually sleep longer or go back to putting him down later. I don't mind feeding him in the middle of the night at all, but it seems like he might be happier in the day if he gets a longer stretch at night. I am a FTM so advice is welcome.

  • FTM here too. Our routine is bath around 8, then lotioned, swaddled and bottle. She usually falls asleep between 9 and 930. I usually get 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. My baby is amazing, she sleeps like a champ. Are you doing a nightly bath? I know most people say it's not needed but once we started doing it nightly it made a huge difference in her sleeping through the night. She now loves baths and we just make sure to slather her with lotion so she doesn't get dried out. You might try that. They say babies love routine and it's definitely helped us!

  • I'm a FTM too. Everynight I do a routine with my baby which consist of bath around 10, put lotion on and then I give her a bottle. I put her to sleep and she will sleep 5 hours the least and 6 hours the most. I can't complain. My baby awesome!! Big Smile My baby already knows her routine. About 10 mins or 10 on the dot, she starts to get fussy and her eyes start getting droopy and red around the eye lid. I agree with mrsshawnavanb, babies love routine. I will keep on trying to put your baby to sleep earlier for a couple of days until he gets use to going to sleep earlier.

I'm glad someone asked, because I was curious myself.  He tends to do best if I put him down between 10-11pm.  So I begin nursing around 9:45 or so, he nurses a long time, falls asleep. I swaddle him and lay him down to sleep.  His prior feeding is usually 7pm-ish, and he's awake for a bit, then usually takes a catnap from 8:30- until he's hungry for his last meal before bed.  If I put him down any earlier he doesn't seem to sleep as good.  We've gotten a few nights of 6hours/feed/3.5hours (that's time between feedings, not actual sleeping time), but we still often get 4hrs/3hrs.

  • Logan used to go down about 10 - 10:30, but suddenly started getting sleepy around 9. We started putting her down at 9, and now we have switched up to 7:30 or 8 pm. I agree wiht the routine thing though. She will get home from daycare around 5:30, we hang out and play (tummy time) and ready a book for a bit, then around 6:30 or 7, we do bath time, not necessarily every day, but starting to do that daily, then she eats about 7 or 7:30. After eating, we rock and she is down by 8.

She is finally sleeping until about 2, then she feeds for about 30 min, back to bed by 2:30, and will sleep another 3-4 hours. The past few nights we are awake again at 5-5:30 but then she will sleep until 7:30 or so.

Daycare has really thrown our previous schedule off, but we are establishing a new one now. She is just exhausted after daycare, but the bright side is that I am able to eat dinner now at a normal hour, not at 10 pm any more.

  • By 7-8pm my LO is overdone and ready for bed.  Every other night I do a bath.  On nights there is no bath I do a little massage with baby lotion instead.  Then pj's, swaddle, and nurse.  He has no problems falling asleep.  He will sleep until 2 or 3am on a goodnight so I think that's a decent stretch.

Edit:  He will sleep until 2 or 3am, nurse and then go back to sleep.  After that big stretch he will wake every 2-3 hours again.  He is ready to get up and out of his crib by 6 or 7am.

That is us exactly. Good to know we aren't the only ones not sleeping 7-8 hour stretches.

  • We start the routine around 8 and are usually in bed and asleep by 9:30

DD sleeps a 7 hour stretch, feeds, and will sleep 3-4 more.

I think an earlier bed time is better but you should do what works best for Beck. Perhaps try the earlier time for a week and see how it goes. :)

  • We start routine about 745 and shes out by 830. Last night was our third night she slept 8 straight hours. Hoping this keeps up

This, but with 1-2 nightime wake ups for food/change (we don't wake her oursselves, but I guess her body still needs it)

  • My eldest goes down at 6:30. And Elise is in bed at 8:30 then I dream feed her at 11. Then she usually gives me anywhere between 6-8 hours.
  • We start our bedtime routine by 8:00. She's generally asleep between 9:00 and 9:30. I love our routine of bath, dress and swaddle, nurse, and then bed. She's really getting used to it, and I think that's what helped her move to 8 hour stretches.

  • I asked my friend about this today. She has a 4 month old and she said it seemed like every time they got DD figured out something would change - whether they went on vacation or she went through a growth spurt.

Sometimes I really wish my baby could talk and tell me when he is hungry and tired or how much he loves his mommy ;) I am figuring his cues out but words would be awesome!

  • We haven't tried to direct her sleeping schedule yet.  She just naturally falls asleep sometime between 8:45 and 9:15ish (except last night, during which for some reason all hell broke loose and she screamed a solid hour from 9:30 to 10:30... hoping that never happens again).  She wakes up to eat around 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., then for the day around 8-9 a.m.

I think sometime after 12 weeks is when you can begin trying to move their schedules to where you'd like them.  It often doesn't work, though you can at least try for consistency.
