I'm not afraid to admit that I'm on WIC. I work and we are eligible. I feel that I have a right to use it just as anyone else that is eligible for the program. I think it's petty to say that people who get WIC are taking advantage of the system. It's a great program and no one should be ashamed because they are on the program. You would be surprised who is eligible anyways. It's not like you have to live in poverty to qualify. I've seen a few responses to this subjest that suggest you shouldn't have a nice phone, clothes, car, etc if you are on the program. Give me a break!
Re: I'm not ashamed
No, just an older android phone. It was $1 at at&t!
I think anyone who sends their children to public schools, uses the local library, has ever needed help from firemen or the police, or has accepted financial assistance for education or unemployment shouldn't have anything nice like iPhones or laptops. And they certainly shouldn't be bumping because they obviously need to be getting a 2nd or 3rd job in their spare time!
Oh wait, some social programs are okay. But others aren't?
Browneyedhunni, you have nothing to be ashamed about.
Sorry for my ignorance but what is WIC?
Either way, programs are there for a reason, to help people, and they all have qualifications, so as long as somebody doesn't lie to get in the program, why would anybody care?
Now if you were choosing to smoke, have a cell phone and cable TV, but were not feeding or clothing your kid, sure that is a problem.
Women, infants, children. They give vouchers that can be used to be bread, eggs, cheese, and veggies, formula, milk, cereal ect. Very specific and healthy things. Its a very structured program and helps out a lot of people...from what I've seen that is.
I don't mean for this to sound flameful, I promise...
But it is my understanding that the purpose of food stamps is to help people feed their families, right? Could you afford to buy enough Ramen to sustain your family for the month? Probably. But the food stamp program is in place so that you don't have to feed your children crap food that you could have been able to buy WITHOUT the assistance. Also, with the trending rates of childhood and adult obesity, it makes even more sense as to why the assistance programs have been created with the goal of assuring that mothers/fathers/children/people are healthy. People don't want to see their tax dollars being spent on Cheetos when that same dime could go toward a nutritious meal for a family.
Apparently, Florida is looking to ban the ability to buy crap food with food stamps:
The women interviewed for the article (link below) summed it up pretty well...

I'm not saying I buy complete sht all the time. I get chips, cookies, and sodas. Then again I also buy Leia's formula with it whenever I need to and stuff for "normal" dinners. Like chicken, canned or frozen vegetables, and whatever else we need.
