Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Rec places to visit in Columbus, OH

We are going next week for a few days. We're going for the zoo but I think we'll need some more points of interest to fill the time. So if you know of anywhere fun to go with a toddler, share them please!

Also, are there any big used book stores?

  • COSI is great! It's a hands on science center.

Yes on the used book store! There is an amazing used bookstore in the German Village. I forgot the name of it, but its awesome. Also I am pretty sure they have an Aquarium. Also go to a Jeni's Ice Cream shop. You will thank me later! ;)

  • Thanks so much for the info on the bookstore! It looks fantastic. I'm on a diet but I might have to try that ice cream.

I think we'll definitely have to check out COSI

The Ohio state fair starts next Wednesday. I do not know if you are a fair person, but it is a big fair. Lots to see! I love the zoo and Cosi too.

I think the bookstore is called the Book Loft, it is awesome.  There is a great park in German Village called Schiller Park as well.  The Franklin Park Conservatory is a neat place to visit near downtown, they just re-did the riverfront in downtown and there is a park called the Scioto Mile (all of these would be near COSI).  There is amazing shopping in the suburbs, Easton Town Centre is a mix of indoor/outdoor with lots of great shops as well as Polaris Mall. The Scioto Mile and Easton both have small spray parks that kids can play in, and there is a big water park attached to the zoo if you are interested as well.  If they are in town, there is a minor league baseball team, the Columbus Clippers, they play downtown in a brand new ballpark that is laid back and fun.  Enjoy my hometown!!

    • You should check out the Plain Township Aquatic Center near new albany. It has an awesome kiddie area and it's only $8 to get in. If you are heading to German Village for the Book Loft, nearby Schiller park has a playground for kids 5 and under. Another free option is the Scioto Mile fountains downtown near COSI. And I second the OP who mentioned Jeni's- best ice cream you will ever have.
    • Yup, I second The Book Loft. It is AMAZING and so fun. The whole German Village is really fun to walk around and, of course, eat everything in sight, so make sure you leave time for that!

COSI is also a total must.

The North Market is near downtown and is always a great spot for food and goodies. The original Jeni's is there and the vietnamese place is out of this world.

The Short North is kind of the area between OSU's campus and downtown. They have a great park (the name escapes me right now) and wonderful shopping. Lots of boutiques and one-of-a-kind stores. I used to spend a lot of time there.

If it is raining or super hot, Polaris mall has a great kid's play area. We always stop there on our trips from Akron (where we live) to Dayton (where our parents live) and let Izey run off some energy. It is a great mall for shopping, but we never really partake in that, as Izey runs as fast as he can to the "zooooooo!" (The play area is sponsored by the zoo so there are all these big animals for them to climb on. It's really fun.)

Easton is a great outside mall. They also have a splash pad, so that is a free activity to keep in mind!

Franklin Park Conservatory is beautiful and can fill a whole afternoon. We haven't been there since we've been parents, so I don't really remember what kid-centered activities there are, but I love it! Something to think about! There is a butterfly room where butterflies fly around and will land on you. I know Izey would love that!

Hope this helps! I lived in Columbus for 4 years and LOVED it. It really is a great city. Have a wonderful time!!

    • I grew up in Columbus and "jackiback" hit all the great spots. TONS of awesome restaurants. If you swing by Dublin (where I actually grew up) there is a water area called the "Dancing Hares" Giant statue rabbits with water that shoots up out of the cement. It's across from one of the Dublin pools. Kids run around and get soaked. Super fun and FREE!

Get some Donato's Pizza (one I grew up on) because it's just tasty. And Graeter's Ice Cream. French Pot= high butter fat= heaven.

      Have fun!

The park is called Goodale Park. It's awesome but their fountain is closed now for repair :-(  It's a beautiful area. I lived their after college for about 7 years and miss it dearly!

    • You got great recs. COSI has a fun kidspace for little kids and also much bigger exhibits for older kids. Everyone loves Jenis, but personally I prefer Graeters. I'd recommend trying both.
