=(

Not so good appt. today. I am 12 weeks and 3 days and went for my 12 week appt. Well she did a pap (which is always the best...NOT) and then she couldn't find the heartbeat and said well if the baby is laying further back it is hard to hear at 12 weeks and instead of 4 weeks I am going back in 2 to get checked. I guess I am happy she didn't make me wait 4 weeks but now I have to wait 2 weeks praying everything is ok..ty for reading just so excited and hubby took off work to go and nothing just a little disappointed

  • 12 weeks is really early! I went in today at 14w3d and it was very very faint. It made me nervous but it my OB just said it would be louder next time. I hope everything is fine and at least you don't have to wait 4 weeks to hear it again!

  • I went in at 12 wks 1 day and the dr had a really difficult time finding the heart beat. She had to point the doppler really far down behind my pubic bone, because at this point the baby is still small and nestled deep in there. So try to keep your hopes up!

And how irresponsible of your dr to send you home with these worries :(.  Maybe you can call back and see if they can get you in for an ultrasound earlier?

  • Ugh, pins and needles!!  I am wondering the same thing as others, did they explain why they didn't do an ultrasound?  Hope you get some reassurance very soon.

I'm glad she is having you come back in 2 weeks instead of 4. It's still early and not at all uncommon to have a hard time finding the heartbeat, but I'm sure it's going to be a long 2 weeks. I wish she would have done an ultrasound so you wouldn't have to wait.
  • That sucks that she couldn't give you a u/s, that's standard policy at my clinic. The nurse couldn't get the baby with the doppler at 14 weeks, and I had an u/s and everything was just fine. Doppler fail is super common at 12 weeks. Try not to worry. Most likely everything is fine.

  • She said I have a history of 2 healthy pregnancies with no problems and she isn't worried. She was trying all over very low and side to side nothing only mine. Also, my Hgb is only 10 so I have to add an extra iron tab. I am an RN and know too much it makes me worry. I am thinking if my Hgb is low maybe there is a reason I am just nervous and going to borrow a friends doppler and try every day till I hear it lol

  • Same happened to me at my 12 week appt. I just went back this week and she found it!  Stay positive. I worried the whole time!

  • I agree. I'd see if you can get in for an u/s.. previous healthy pregnancies or not. You would recommend that for your patients, I'm sure!

  • At 12 weeks she couldn't find the hb either and with my history she order the nurse to bring in the u/s machine. I was so relived when we saw the baby with a hb of 141.

  • When I had the sads about not feeling preggy or thinking something was wrong I would just take a pee test...kind of silly, but to see those 2 pink lines might make you happy and rest a little easier!! Just a thought...hang in there chica!

  • Can't they do an u/s? I'd ask for one.

    Yes

Some dopplers are more sensitive than others, but my CNM switched to a more sensitive one when she had trouble finding mine with the one she originally brought into the room at my 11w, 6d appt.

Odd they wouldn't do an u/s just to ease your mind.  Seems like I get an u/s at the drop of the hat; so far I've had one at every RE/OB/MFM appt I've gone to this pregnancy.  Its going to be a little weird going to the next one and not having one.

  • Maybe you can call her and tell her you are really concerned and you would like to get an ultrasound done.

I don't want to freak you out more then you probably already are (I am also an RN), but I would ask for an ultrasound. The bold statement above means nothing with regards to this pregnancy; every pregnancy every woman has a 1:4 chance of a miscarriage...regardless of how many previous healthy pregnancies she has had. (In fact, it isn't even until you have three consecutive losses that they increase your likelihood).

12 weeks is early, and I am sure everything is fine, but if you find yourself on pins and needles the next couple of days (I would be) I would call and ask for an u/s to ease your mind.

I know you're trying to help but this isn't good advice. I bet OP is fine but for someone that does miscarry their HPT will still show positive because the hormone is in their system. They must miscarry naturally (bleeding) or have a D&C for the hormone to no longer be present. So taking a HPT to ease your worries isn't doing anything. I've heard this said a few times now on these boards and just wanted to make sure people heard the truth and don't waste money on HPTs.

  • I know it's frustrating (same thing happened to me at both my 12 week appointments), but I'm sure that everything is fine!  Especially if your doctor isn't worried.  Just keep thinking positive thoughts and I'm sure you'll hear it in 2 weeks :)

  • I went to a doc appointment at 11 weeks 3 days and she said she most likely would not be able to find HB on doppler so she took me in for a quick US to listen instead.  They have one in office so makes it easy but I wish yours would have done the same for you so you would not have to worry.  Take care girl!
  • I'm so sorry. I know the wait is tough. Hopefully it was simply too soon and you'll heard it loud and clear in 2 weeks. :) I'm sure LO is fine. I know ts easier said than done, but hang in there! Sending all positive vibes your way! GL!

  • We couldn't find the HB at the 12-week u/s, either, but my OB did an u/s instead, because it's just cruel to make you wait that long to confirm that everything is okay.  Sorry she is making you wait, but if it were me, I would call back to see if she can schedule you for an u/s sooner, that's just wrong.

  • My doctor didn't even try at my 12 week appt.  He said it can be very hard to find it so he didn't want to worry me.  I went for my NT scan 3 days later so I was okay with that.

I have a home doppler and even last night I had a bit of a hard time finding it at 14 weeks.. then the baby moved and there it was

This is getting off topic a bit, but even with a m/c or D&C it can still take weeks to get a negative HPT (depending on how far you were). I was still getting positive HPTs weeks following my losses.

But again, OP, I am sure everything is fine and I hope that you are able to get in sooner if it keeps worrying you. I know the limbo/waiting game is very hard.

  • I had a pap done at my first appointment. She could feel my cervix and uterus when she was digging around down there and guessed I was 8 weeks. An u/s the next day verified 8 weeks 1 day so my Dr. was spot on.

If she was checking around down there and you were manually measuring at 12 weeks and are right on target that is probably why she didn't feel the need to do an u/s. If you felt smaller she probably would have suggested it.

    Breathe! It will be okay!

  • I had an appointment Wednesday, at 12w4d -- they found the heartbeat, but barely, and it was so quiet I almost couldn't hear it. So I wouldn't worry too much!

  • This is my 3rd and with all 3 the first time they looked for the heartbeat they could not find it.  I went last week and it took him forever to find it.  The doctor this time was just not giving up till he found it, when he did find it, it moved so fast.  So we didn't hear much either.  I am sure everything was ok, alot of times they can't find it at first. Good Luck and I hope they get it for you next time.
