you crafty mamas.. styrofoam?

i am having a kid party in a few weeks and am amaming some pinterest inspired centerpieces. it involves a DIY cake stand a large styrofoam ball (10-12 ") and dum dum suckers stuck all around the ball then the ball sits atop the cake stand.  hopefully u can kind of picture that. anyways, i am looking for alternatives to the styrofoam ball bc the size i need costs way too much for just one!  i have searched many places for cheaper ones and have had little success.  any suggestions on a way to create this or something similar that wont be as m uch? i was kind of thinking about buying a plastic play ball for 1 dollar at walmart  and then glueing some sort of wrapped candy all around it? so kinda the same effect?

Could you make a smaller one like these?  https://pinterest.com/search/?q=candy+topiary

Walmart had  very inexpensive half circle styrofoam with the fake floral stuff/ candles I think it was about 10" but not sure, you could buy two and hot glue them together first.

Otherwise I think your other idea sounds great too.

Here is a pic of the one from WalMart if it gives you any idea.  We threw it away so I can't measure it. (It's covered in tissue paper with the cake pops stuck in, if that wasn't obvious)

  • Ive seen some of that floral foam stuff at dollar tree, but I'm not sure if its the size/shape you need.
  • Okay this is a long shot, but what about  making balls with newspaper and tape. spray adhesive all over it.  roll it in shredded tissue paper and then stick the lollipops in?  Then you don't have to worry about spending all that money on something going in the trash.
  • i just googled, it's crazy how expensive those are! You could definitely do it out of rice krispy treats for a few bucks (and if no ones eating it anyway, do the store brand cheap cereal and marshmallows!). I've done that for molding cake toppers and stuff.

or maybe paper mache? but I think the RKT would work better.
