This is my first pregnancy and I don't have any insurance. My husband just got a raise, so I do not qualify for Medi-Cal. What should I do? I am open to just about anything.
Planned Parent Hood ... I know they charge based on income, and I believe they do prenatal check ups. They also would probably have ideas for you in terms of resources, and/or might be able to refer you to hospitals that would be more likely to would work with you.
My sister enrolled AIM program (or something like it) which from what I recall, essentially provided insurance during her pregnancy. They had doctors & hospitals that they already worked with, and she essentially had a premium, copays, etc. but swears by it for helping to keep the costs down. She also has mentioned that WIC (women, infants and children) can provides coupons and assistance in terms of formula and healthy food options. Also you can see if there is a local Las Madres group - they are amazing resources & membership can get you discounts and other perks, the ones around me usually have a big clothing event where you can get 2nd hand baby clothes (& items) by the bag for cheap. Around me there is a 2x's per year sale of children/baby items (in good condition) called Outrageous Outgrowns. Know about this from a friend who is in Las Madres.
Have heard of people shopping around for a hospital ... they call hospitals to find out the cost of birth without insurance (sometimes going into the Central Valley/away from the Bay Area where procedures, births, etc. cost less)
No one can be denied for California Medi-Cal Pregnancy Only Coverage. I know because I've had to use it twice. You will only be covered for pregnancy related medical issues (appts, ultrasounds, delivery, post-partum up to 6wks unless medically needed, etc.) and depending on your income there may or may not be a co-pay (we made over $2700 month when we needed it and there wasn't a co-pay).
You need to call your local county Health Services and make an appointment to apply for the Medi-Cal Pregnancy Coverage. I won't lie, it's a long, pain in the ass process, but as long as you stay on top of the application, proof of income paperwork, etc. then it won't be so bad.
If you have any questions pls email me (I don't check this board often or my PMs) at kel_be at yahoo com.
