1st Trimester

Tipped Uterus and Doppler

When could I reasonably expect to hear a heartbeat with doppler? I've heard it can be more difficult with a tipped uterus but I don't know if that's true or something people just say because...well...people say things. Doesn't mean they have a clue what they are talking about.

My long time OBGYN dropped the OB part so I made an appointment with a new doctor. They are getting me in around 10.5 weeks. I called today to ask if I would get an ultrasound and they said they do not do them at that time. So, I assume they will use a doppler? I'm 30 years old (today), no kids, one previous missed miscarriage. I've been on edge thinking I'm going to mc this one too. I really wanted an ultrasound which is why I made an appointment. My plan is to hire a midwife once I get through the first trimester.

So anyway, will I be able to hear a hb or am I going to need to wait until 12 weeks? Should I even try? If they can't hear it, I think it will just make me more anxious.

Re: Tipped Uterus and Doppler

  • You might, if not don't freak out. My appointment at 12 weeks they had to do an ultrasound because my uterus is tilted as well. Baby also liked to run from the wand. So don't fret, they will keep trying!

  • I also have a tilted uterus. I just had my first appt. at 8.5 weeks and my doc used the Doppler just to see if they could find the HB (this was before she knew I had a tilted uterus). She couldn't find it but said it is completely normal that they don't at this point, and even more so because I have a tipped uterus. She offered me to come in at 10 weeks to try to find it, and if they can't then she would do an ultrasound just so I an have reassurance. We will just need to be more patient than those with a normal uterus :)

I have a tilted ute and didn't find the baby's heartbeat with a home doppler until 18 weeks. My dr was able to find it at 15 weeks with her stronger doppler in the office, but she couldn't find it at my 11 week appointment. It really just depends on how your ute is positioned and where baby is in there.  Really, I wasn't able to consistently find it on my little guy until about 20 weeks.  I really doubt you would be able to find it now anyway, as 8 weeks is still really early for a doppler even if everything is aligned perfectly, so I would skip it so as not to worry yourself.  Hang in there!

  • I have a tilted uterus, I didn't even think about problems with hearing the heart beat. I havn't got to hear it yet, I had my first appt at 8weeks and he said it was too early. My next appt is at 13 weeks, I hope he's able to find the heartbeat!!! I've been nervous/anxious about not being able to hear heartbeat or having a u/s done! Good luck to you!

Of course not, my appt isn't until 10.5 weeks.  I am not buying one. I'm just wondering about how things might go at the appointment. Especially now that the person I trusted to keep quiet about my pregnancy actually didn't. I may have to tell our parents soon which I had not anticipated.

  • My ute is retroverted and I got heart tones w/ my home doppler at 11 weeks with this pregnancy and at 12 weeks with my last one. Best $50 ever spent. At 10+ weeks, it's possible but you need to be patient with it. Generally you can't just turn it on and expect to hear the HB. So if your doctor only tries for a minute or two, don't be surprised if you can't hear it.
  • I had an appointment at 10 weeks on the nose and they couldn't hear it with the doppler, had to pull out the travel u/s machine to check on peanut.

  • I have a tipped uterus as well and I had a 10 week appointment where my doctor used a doppler but did not hear anything and then we did an ultrasound that same day and I got to hear the heartbeat.

I just had another appointment today and I'm in the middle of my 12th week and I did hear the babies heartbeat with the doppler this time. It was loud and strong. Don't be freaked out if you do not hear it...it will come.
