Love and Logic tip of the day

Since we're on the discipline topic.  I follow Love and Logic Institute on Facebook and they post various tips.  Today's is:

When kids do something well, we can ask, "How did you do that?" and steer them toward answers such as "I worked hard" or "I kept trying" or "I've been practicing".

  • Is this a book you can order? Or just a theory that you can research?

They have quite a few love and logic books and classes.  I haven't actually read or attended any of them, but plan to.  I'm pretty sure it's in line with my philosophies just by reading about it here, on blogs, etc

I own this book, just haven't read it yet:

The big thing people associate with love and logic is giving kids reasonable, age appropriate choices.  For example, in the morning instead of picking out DS's clothes for him, I ask him if he wants to wear his train shirt or lightening shirt and he makes a choice.  It tends to help with power struggles.  Instead of fighting getting dressed, he chooses and then happily gets dressed.  They encourage things like natural consequences, reasonable choices and encouraging kids to think through their problems (rather than solving them for them).

  • There is a whole Love and Logic book that is absolutely fantastic. It's by far one of my most favorite child rearing books!

  • Good to know!  I really like the idea of giving the child a choice but still being able to maintain some control.  I could see Andrew picking out a batman costume to wear to church in a couple of years! :)

  • They actually have several books, some deal specifically with the teen years which is great. They have an awesone website and even a support line.

  • Thanks for sharing!  I really like the sounds of this.  I think I will have to "like" them and look into a book or 2!

I love love and logic and also like them on fb.  It is the only parenting advice that actually works with my oys, ages 3 and 5.
