biking momma's

If you were biking during your pregnancy how long were you able to continue until you got to uncomfortable? I am 5w5d right now and on our last ride was already noticing that I was getting really uncomfortable using my arrow (sp) bars. It wasn't until the last 10 miles of a 50 mile ride, but I was still surprised that it is starting so early. Do you think it will get better as the uterus moves up and out of the pelvic area? Also what brand do you like for maternity biking shorts?

For this pregnancy, I haven't been cycling, but for my 1st one I did it until just over halfway into my pregnancy. I did have to switch from my road bike to my mountain bike when the road bike was no longer comfortable, and about the same time (largely due to weather), I was only riding indoors on my trainer. I don't recall exactly when I switched to the more upright bike (mtb). Go with how you feel. I only wore regular biking shorts, just wore them under my belly and went with one size up. When pg, I can't stand having pants that go over the belly. It just doesn't feel right for me. Good luck!

I had to stop around 25 weeks.  For me, it did not get better when my uterus moved up out of my pelvic area.  The last weekend I rode, my pelvis/crotch was really sore (using the aerobars made it worse, btw) and my back was hurting and sore from the extra weight from my front side.  I didn't wear maternity biking shorts.  I just wore my regular ones under my belly.

  • I'm just a casual biker (~10 miles) and ride a hybrid.  My OB told me that I should stop around 16-20w b/c that's when the bump is big enough to cause one's balance to be off.  I actually was able to ride until 21w or so, only stopped b/c I fell and that kind of freaked me out.  I didn't fall b/c I lost my balance; I was riding w/DH and he stopped suddenly and I couldn't swerve fast enough to avoid him.  It was a minor fall but enough to make me stop riding.

I still ride very short distances right now (like 2-3miles) once a week to my town's farmers market.  I get out of breath pretty quickly and bike pretty slow.  Haven't found balancing an issue though.

I outgrew my bike shorts at around 16-17w, so I just switched to regular exercise shorts... didn't feel like shelling out $$$ for maternity bike shorts which I was gonna wear for just a short while.

P.S. it never got "better" as the uterus moved up after 1st tri.

  • I'm a lousy cyclist, but it was about 16-18 weeks I couldn't reach my handlebars comfortably. I'm still riding a bit on a more upright bike, with normal shorts in a XXL size (couldn't find maternity exercise gear at all, at least not that didn't cost a fortune)
