So..my son is 5 months and tried to roll out of the Rock N Play yesterday.
. He's still very tiny (12 pounds) ,and fits in it just fine, but I'm afraid he's going to fall out of it. Plus, he's old enough to be in his crib now. I'm a little nervous to transition to the crib, as he doesn't like sleeping on his back. He can roll so I guess if he wants to he can go to his stomach.
Two things-
1. Anyone have any suggestions to make this transition easy? He is already a Terrible sleeper, so I'm afraid ths could be hell. he has never been put down 'drowsy but awake'. How long did it take to get back to normal sleep schedule?
2. Anyone have success using the Magic Sleep Suit to transition? He's used to be swaddled in a Halo sleep sack with swaddler and I was thinking this may help. I don't feel comfortable putting that on him since he rolls and he gets extremely sweaty in it, but his arms and legs really keep him awake.
Thanks sooo much!!
Re: RnP transition and Magic Sleep Suit
Hello! Sorry, I mostly lurk, but I have experience with this and I thought it might be helpful.
I transitioned out of the RnP and into the crib and from swaddled to Magic Sleep Suit last month, so I was hoping to help.
Here is kind of what we did. I apologize for not being very sure, but I was extremely busy during that time with work.
1.) I put the RnP in the nursery so she was used to the visuals of the nursery (2-3 days)
2.) I had her take her 2 short naps in the crib - it sucked and was hard, but it got the process started (2-3 days)
3.) I started putting her down for her big nap and overnight sleep swaddled in the crib (3-5 nights)
4.) I put her in the sleepsuit for her short naps (2-3 days)
5.) I put her in the sleepsuit overnight - and she now STTN almost every night. Usually 8 - 6.
I know that sounds like a long cycle, but I am a FTM and didn't want to rush it. I also work from home so I have the luxury of total control over naps / sleep. It worked for us. In retrospect, I really think I could have just put her in the crib with the sleepsuit and just had 1-2 kinda crappy nights... but this was headache free for the most part.
I should mention she gets 50% breast milk / 50% formula. (I know some people feel there is a correlation between sleep and feeding.) She is 4 months and 3 days old. She became a really good sleeper when I started using the suit, but she was never an "awful" sleeper. She has reflux. She is on a loose "Eat, Sleep, Play" schedule. She take 1, 20 - 40 minute nap in the morning, a 2 - 3 hour nap in the middle of the day and another 20 - 40 minute nap in the evening. Hmmmm... trying to think of other things people have told me are sleeping variables....
A little washing tip on the suit - when you dry it, turn it inside out. I heard people complaining about drying and so I just turned it inside out when I put it in the drier and it worked like a charm.
Regardless, I have heard mixed things about the effectiveness suit, but I have to say, we LOVE it. When she goes to her grandparents, or we travel, we just bring the suit, and a little white noise and she is usually good to go.
Thank you both!! I love the Rock N Play so much!! I wish he could stay in it forever!!
I like the idea of starting with naps...not as stressful as the middle of the night can be. I know for sure he will wake up a lot (I tried putting him in the crib dead asleep today and he immediately woke up!).. How did you handle the wake ups? I'm not really for long periods of CIO, especially with so many changes at once (sleep suit, crib..)
Lim planning to start naps tomorrow, and bedtime on Monday. (my heart started racing just typing that!! Lol)
My daughter is 4 months and 4 days and I have not let her CIO - at least, based on my understanding of CIO?
Some times I put her down and she grumps or fusses for a little. I set an alarm on my phone for between 2 - 3 minutes and stay close to her room with the monitor on. I let her fuss for 2 - 3 minutes and then go in and silently stroke her head and give her back her paci, hold her hand, etc. but never talk to her. I make sure her white noise is on and loud enough to block out weird sounds, etc. Sometimes she doesn't fuss at all. If I have to do it 3 - 4 times I usually just pick her up and play with her a little longer until she starts showing more sleepy signs. I change up between 2 - 3 minutes because I don't want her "learning" how long it takes for me to get there.
I will say, I let her "fuss" and cry at a low level for those 2-3 minutes - BUT if she starts to wind up, rather than down - I'm there in second! I know CIO works for a lot of people - but I don't think my baby and I would be able to do it.
I have no research to back any of this up, never read a sleep training book, etc. I just did this with her and it has worked for us so far. She knows I will always come, but I give her a chance to take care of it on her own.
I hope this helps!
